The Tyranny Of The Idiot Brigade

By D. Asghar

I was flabbergasted by the recent statements of Sunni Ittehad Council of Pakistan, warning of complete anarchy, in case if any blasphemy laws were repealed.

It is downright ridiculous to expect anything different from these idiots. Enough has been said and written about the recent case of Asiya Bibi. Of course any and everybody has weighed in on the case to gain maximum political mileage.

As much as it is denied, the hyper sensitivity of the religion in masses has brought us to this deplorable condition. It is rather comical to see us in such
a disarray in presence of such councils, which supposedly should bring various religious parties under an umbrella to create harmony. But in our country the words, clergy and harmony, are supposedly never aligned, no matter what.

Agreed that religion is a way of life, but we very often tend to forget that a way of life for personal betterment. When it becomes an enigma and most often in our case an obsession, then some correctness becomes absolutely necessary.

I have repeatedly stated on other forums in the past as well, that there is nothing wrong in the religion (s) for that matter. It is always the application of the religion, where the question becomes more murky and puzzling. My faith
regardless of what it is, is solely for my redemption in the hereafter.

The traditional opponents of Islam have a field day, when they see our idiotic fervor. The way our politicians cave in under pressure from religious zealots is equally pathetic. I agree with many here, who say that Jinnah’s Pakistan has
been hijacked by the all powerful clergy and their likes, who had vehemently opposed him in the past. Since Jinnah’s passing, they have wrong fully steered
his vision into this idiotic path of no return.

The bigger question that most emotionally charged Pakistanis and in most cases, most Muslims tend to over look is, can a Danish cartoonist, a Salman Rushdie, a
Face book page or even Asiya Bibi (assuming just for the sake of argument all allegations against her are correct), adversely impact the faith of billion plus people. Is Islam so weak that it cannot stand a negative comment or abuse? I don’t think so and many would agree with me.

The reverence of Islam’s Prophet can never be diminished by any frivolous allegation, ridicule or scorn. Many tried that at the dawn of this faith and through filth at our beloved Prophet PBUH. If Prophet PBUH was the vengeful
kind, he would have awarded the harshest punishment to his detractors. But it was not in his character to do so. Yes, if we really need a lesson to enhance our character, we need to emulate a fraction of his patience and perseverance.

The religious zealots have always used mis placed anger and passion to ignite the discord among various sects of the Muslims and Non Muslims for that matter. Again, when a following of a religious belief leads to killing of another human being on the basis of allegation and innuendo or for that matter disagreement, some correction is badly warranted.

In my humble opinion, it is not the law which is an issue here. Even if the law is reversed, the hyper religious forces will react negatively one way or the other. It is in the mental mould that, “my way or the highway.” The highway in this case means death in most cases.

It is high time that mental over haul of the masses is done in our land. This scribe in his previous scribbles has touched on some of the remedies that are badly needed to alter the corroded mind set. The foremost step that our nation needs to take is, to separate the religion from the state. By doing so Pakistan will not become “un-Islamic.” This will actually enhance and augment the true principles of our faith. The clergies must be awarded exemplary punishment who instigate violence in the name of our faith.

Tyranny of any sort, even of religion is harmful for the state. This is what our brigade of idiots fails to understand. The state has an equal obligation to its
citizens when it comes to life, liberty, rights and security. The rule of majority does not apply at that particular point. Some of my friends will call this all a liberal rant, but in fact it is not. It is a human assessment based on solid facts. We are deviating from the basis of our faith, sadly in the name of our faith.

I think, your wish of “repeal of blasphemy” laws will only be fulfilled, when history repeats its self. Which i’m confident will repeat.
The remaining provinces of 1947 Pakistan become independent countries and write their new constitutions and take away the stupid laws, just the way Bangladesh did.
Pakistani society has so much screwedup that it can not be fixed. Thanks to ZA Bhutto.
Only solution is to take it apart and make some thing else of the its parts. Unfortunately.

Great read. One suggestion though, when you try to get peaceful and tolerant inspiration from Muhammed’s life, it kind of back fires because the people you are addressing to get their not so peaceful inspiration from Muhammed as well. You will keep moving in circles – something similar happens with Jinnah being secular versus Islamist debate…it is never ending…

My suggestion try drawing the peaceful and tolerant inspiration from common sense – will be easier to defend – like freehussaini does…

btw – do you know when will chowk be back

    thanks

“Islam is a religion which stands for peace and insists on justice.
One must conclude that where there are Muslims, there is likely to be little or no Islam.”.

A good cliche but too sweeping.
It can be said, vice verse, where there is true Islam there can be no Muslims (The submitters to their selfish ego and not the true believers in what is truth and justice). but these are all vague terms.
In Pakiland the Islam has been devoid of any element of Deen (Faith) and has become merely a political despotism and ritualism (Mullah fascism) by requiring its paak (purified) citizens to submit humiliating declarations about their faith to become ‘Halfi Muslims’ to be differentited from ‘non-halfi’ Muslims called ‘Ahmadies’. As such there is niether Islam nor peace and justice here but only mullah’s ‘deen-fassaad’ and submitters to it.

Political Islam is a menace that is the biggest threat to the whole world, Pakistan seems to be the place where this threat is being played to its fullest extent.

The most progressive and least corrupt nation of Asia got turned upside because of the use of political Islam.

We suffer today to such a severe extent that the country could be devoured by this political tool.

And no one has suffered more from political Islam than Muslims themselves.

Can’t we try these idiots with sedition.

These bastards always threaten the state with such nonsense.

Well said indeed. The Word of God gives us the sterling, though oft-ignored principle of “lakum deenukum wa liya deen” [Quran 109:6], meaning “your religion is for you and my religion is for me”. Applying your insightful rendering of the word “deen”, this verse could be translated as “your way of life be for you and my way of life be for me”. What else is Pluralism? In fact, the Quran teaches and endorses not only pluralism, but “Pluralism with Equality”. This sterling principle can truly be achieved only in a Secular State.

    D. Asghar Bhai:
One can sense and relate to the pain in your writing at seeing the country being destroyed in the name of religion.

The Jews wait for their Messiah, while they wail by the wall and yet also claim to be the chosen people. The Christians wait for Jesus(as) to return to take them exclusively into heaven, while believing their sins to have already been atoned. The Muslims wait for Jesus(as) to return after a long wait only to be demoted as a non-prophet to establish Islam, and in the meanwhile they consider themselves to be self-sufficient and act like God’s equal through their certificates of faith and immoral fatwas. The contradictions in belief systems are so obvious and yet billions hold on to their beliefs at all costs. It is hard to break out of the mental mold of one’s fathers and forefathers

The mindset that has been reinforced for centuries can not change over night. The mental transformation, when it does happen, is usually attributed by believers to divine intervention. The divine intervention when it comes is much simpler than the mythical forms that a human mind tends to expect. The divine intervention is in the form of Sufis, Walis, and godly persons whom God appoints out of His mercy to guide the stray and decayed mindset. Very few fortunate souls who are humble and who truly seeks Allah’s guidance are able to recognize Allah’s appointees and benefit from the renewed guidance in their lifetime. The candle lighted to show the way by these godly people can not be snuffed by the arrogant and the ignorant because Allah promises to protect it. Scriptures are full of evidence that when the tyranny exceeds limits, it is then that Allah comes to the rescue of the oppressed.

While we continue to spread the message of peace and tolerance, we should contemplate on how history repeats itself. Just remember that “AlaisAllah ho bay kafin Abdahu ?” ( Is not Allah sufficient for his servant?) – Al-Quran

  9. AllahkaBanda

If it is wrong for Muslims to protest against repeal of Blasphemy Laws and give the wayward Muslims and non-Muslims to malign Islam and that too in a country which is constitutionally declared as the Islamic Republic Of Pakistan then can the ignorant zealots who unscrupulously bad mouth others bother to tell the world at large as to Why Mecca and Medina are not open for the non-Muslims, not to speak of why non-Muslims cannot erect their places of worship there???

It is flabbergasting to note that these same badmouthing zealots while talking about the Minorities also emphatically refer to Qadianis. isn’t this a confession by them that the Qadiani’s too are in fact a minority in their own right????

NO, NO, NO, NO…..ABSOLUTELY NOT IN 1953/1974. RATHER IT ALL STARTED IN 1914 WHEN QADIANI KHALIFA 2 MIRZA MAHMUD AHMAD STARTED DECLARING RECITERS OF KALIMA-SHAHDA AS KAFFIR, MURTAD, AND NON-MUSLIMS, MONEKYS, SWINE, HINDUS, CHRISTIANS.
DOES ANYONE NEEDS QADIANI KHALIFA 2 MIRZA MAHMUD AHMAD QUOTES WITH REFERENCES?????????

That Ahmadi Muslims choose to keep this Quranic verse in close view does not imply that it has been copy-righted by them.

Every one is free to live by the principle of “AlaisAllah ho bay kafin Abdahu ?” ( Is not Allah sufficient for his servant?) – Al-Quran”. The whole world can benefit from believing in this truth. Hope this clarification makes you realize that Allah is rab-ul-allameen and therefore equally accessible to all. Regards.

Not withstanding your personal attack on me (a practice of Qadiani Khalifa 2 and his followers–shoot the messenger). I will reply to your effort to malign prophets including Holy Prophet Muhammad SAWS.
Your quote:”It is on record that even prophets and messengers were not spared by the likes of you from having been accused of the most grave of sins. In fact there has not been a single prophet who has not been mocked and scorned.”

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG. AND YOU’RE FALSIFYING:
No one, not even Jews or Christians accused the blessed character of our beloved LAST, FINAL and THE GREATEST prophet i.e. Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW in HIS LIFE TIME. NOT EVEN ONCE.
It is ONLY Qadianis in accordance with teaching of their Qadiani Khalifa 2 Mirza Mahmud Ahmad, intead of replying to immoral sexual charges make FALSE COUNTER CHARGES on Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW. I pray, May Allah SWT curse those Qadianis who make false charges on Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW.

In all humility, may I suggest that you should confine your focus to such intellectual endeavours only, that fall safely within the bounds of your grasp and study. You evidently, have not laboured to read the works of the numerous orientalists, who have gone to all lengths to insult our Holy Prophet. In fact, no prophet has been subjected to such cruel slander, as has been our guide and master Muhammad. Your unique class of ignorance, I’m afraid, is anything but bliss.

May I draw your attention to the following words of the Quran:

“Alas for My servants. There comes not to them a single Messenger, but they mock at him” [Quran 36:30]

Apparently it’s God’s Word against yours. The Holy Prophet was indeed a true Messenger of God and the Quran tells us that all messengers, without exception, have been mocked at. It follows logically that the Prophet, too, was indeed subjected to derision and accusations. Hadith and accounts of history suggest exactly the same.

The epitomized venom you harbour for the leadership of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat, if anything, has rendered your opinion about them quite questionable and dubitable, and thus worthy of being cast aside.

‘YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG. AND YOU’RE FALSIFYING:
No one, not even Jews or Christians accused the blessed character of our beloved LAST, FINAL and THE GREATEST prophet i.e. Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW in HIS LIFE TIME. NOT EVEN ONCE.’

You obviously have neither read seerat nor the work of modern orientalists. The people of the book and polytheist subjected the Prophet to the worst sort of slander and character assassination. While no one could raise a finger against his character before his claim to prophethood (he was called sadiq/amin) but the polytheists, Jews and Christians changed their stance once Islam appeared.

The works of Bernard Lewis (a Jew), Robert Spencer (a Christian) are a case in point. Lewis accuses the Holy Prophet (sw) of running a gang of bandits and Spencer accused him of being a pedophile – God forbid.

And here you are accusing Mirza Mahmud Ahmad of things he did not even know instead of trying to rebut the orientalist criticism of the Prophet (sw).

  23. amaar

    @Fellow-Pakistani

Remember they used to call the Prophet (sw) a soccerer or magician who is splitting families apart and causing rift. Recall the old woman who was so fearful because of this false propaganda that she even asked the Prophet to stay away from that ‘magician’ only to convert when she find out that his benefactor was the one. Remember that Meccans even sent Amr bin al-As to Ethiopia to bring back the fleeing Muslims. Before Negus, Amr pretended that the Muslims were nothing more than a bunch of outlaws (and presumably so was their leader -God forbid) who needed to be extradicted back.

Clearly, you need to remember that every man of God has had to suffer immense ridicule and false accusations. Unfortunately, you are indulging in the mannerisms of the enemies of the Prophet (sw)

Our response: La’nat -ullah -i- alal- kazibeen (The curse of God be on the liars). You are beginning to remind me of Khawarij who opposed Hazrat Ali (sw) tooth and nail and left no stone unturned in harming and hurting the fourth khalifa.

  25. amaar

    @Fellow Pakistani

‘I pray, May Allah SWT curse those Qadianis who make false charges on Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW.’

A lie of monstrous proportions! We as humble servants of the Prophet would try our best to remove false allegations against his character.
The point we are trying to make is that even false and baseless allegations have been made against him (sw) so no wonder similar claims are made against the true followers of the Prophet (sw).

Example: the hypocrites accuse that the Prophet (sw) saw Zainab (ra) naked and asked Zaid (ra) (his adopted son) to divorce her so that he could marry her – God forbid. While this story is an utter lie but there are people who believe in this nonsense. Clearly such claims were false and baseless despite the fact that the Prophet(sw) was the most chaste of men. We Ahmadis have striven to prove wrong this monstrous lie and fabrication against his noble character (e.g. the Prophet (sw) himself married off Zainab to Zaid – probably as her wali).

But there are certain people who simply dont get it. I am afraid that the kind of logic you are following makes you that kind of a person. Spreading false allegations against anyone – mind you – if unproven are punishable by 80 lashes in Islam.

“Wailun likulli humazatin lumaza” [Quran 104:1]

This quotation is from the Quran, which according to my belief is the revealed Word of God – the one and only God. Since you’ve addressed your question to me, therefore I am obliged to present to you my understanding and belief. I believe that the entire text of the Quran, from its first word “Bismillah” to its last word “wan-naas” is Revealed. This entire Book was revealed by God to Muhammad, His Messenger. It is thus, of Divine origin, not human. The only human involvement in the Quran is the role of messengership that was played by Muhammad, who conveyed God’s message to us.

According to what I believe, God spoke to Muhammad, as He spoke to His other messengers.

Thanks Bin Ismael for clarfying that understanding is based on personal belief which is individual prerogative and not based on any universal Divine or Truth principle. This is the beauty of life which shows up in variety of thoughts at multiple understanding level. In indic tradition, the teacher repeatedly tell student that dont belive anything unless it is tested with logic, common sense and thoroughly examined using various human faculties. Same skepticism is applied even to God Almighty even if He directly appears making the claim of Godhood which must measured up to Truth ( Not other way around) at all levels, all the time in every possible circumstances. Thanks again.

The greater bulk of accounts of prophets of the past, including those who appeared in India, has unfortunately not been meticulously preserved. But still, there are priceless gems available here and there. It is said that once Moses (Musa) passed by a shepherd, who was singing a ballad to God:

O God, come to me that I may serve You –
I may warm You with the best of my blankets
I may serve You my goat’s milk to drink
I may massage Your feet and comb Your hair

…and so on it went. Moses reprimanded the shepherd and explained to him that such a song was blasphemy. God had no material body and was in need of no such services. The shepherd, on receiving this guidance from God’s messenger, went mute. A few moments later God spoke to Moses and said: “You have been sent to unite My servants with Me, not to create distances between Me and them. Go back to the shepherd and ask him to continue singing his ballad.” So Moses went back to the shepherd, and told him that God likes his his song and that he should resume singing. So, he did. For you interest, Jalaluddin Rumi has discussed this story at length in his famous Masnavi.

We, as humans, may all be at different levels of belief, understanding, enlightenment and certitude, but never must we drive a even single soul away from the love of God.

    Regards
    Bin Ismail
