Huge Blast at Jamia Naeemia Lahore and in Nowshera

By Yasser Latif Hamdani

There are confirmed reports of a huge blast in Jamia Naeemia, a leading seminary in Lahore.  It is feared that a renowned Sunni Islamic scholar,  Dr. Sarfraz Naeemi,  has passed away in this blast.

Dr.  Sarfraz Naeemi was one of those Islamic scholars who came out in the support of the Swat Operation against the Taliban only a day ago.

Ulema support Swat operation

Published: June 11, 2009

LAHORE – Supporting the Swat military operation, Ullema of Jamaat Ahl-e-Sunnat at the ‘Save Pakistan Convention’ held at Awian-e-Iqbal here on Wednesday stressed upon the government to continue the operation against Taliban and non-state actors till their elimination. They said Taliban were damaging Islam as well as Pakistan by their actions and statements.
The Ullema included Dr Sarfraz Naeemi, Haji Hnif Tayyab, Syed Ajmal Shah Gillani, Sufi Muhammad Shaukat, Munir Ahmad Yousfi, Maulana Farooq Ahmad, Pir Saif-ur-Rehman, Mulana Ghulam Muhammad Sialvi, Mian Muhammad Hanfi, Dr Abid Saifi, Mulana Abdul Mustafa, Mulana Raza-ay Mustafa, Abdul Rasool Qadri, Sarwat Ijaz Qadri, Haji Imdadullah, Mulana Naeem Noori, Syed Sabir Shah, Mufti Masood Ahmad, Pir Karamat Ali and Syed Abid Gardezi etc.
They said that the prime obligation of the government was to take revolutionary steps for the solidarity of state by eliminating the menace of terrorism, providing fundamental rights to the masses without any discrimination of locality. They said Mullah Sufi Muhammad and his aides were the culprits and agent of foreign agencies including RAW, Mosed and CIA, which were conspiring to disintegrate Pakistan.
Haji Hanif Tayyab said the US wanted to roll back Pakistan’s nuclear programme by creating threat of Taliban. He praised PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif for taking brave step to conduct nuclear tests without succumbing to foreign pressure.
Haji Muhammad Fazal said the govt should realise that Jamaat Ahl-e-Sunnat was standing shoulder to shoulder with Pak Army.
Mufti Muhammad said it was felon to call Taliban as Muslims as they were violating the constitution of state, cutting throats of their brothers and sisters.
Muhammad Athar Qadri said Pakistan was created on the basis of Two Nation Theory, adding the nation will never allow these so called Muslim to impose their own version of Islam.

It is clear that Naeemi paid for being an outspoken critic of the Taliban from an Islamic angle.

Meanwhile there are confirmed reports of another bomb attack in the North Western city of Nowshera.

  1. Unfortunately Pakistan is under terrorist attack. Some people consider it civil war. It is not clear who is behind these attacks.

Inna Lillah e Wa Inna Elaihe Raajioon…
Dr. Sarfaraz Naemee and Dr. Khalil have embaced Shahadat…
In Nowshehra Cantt. 8 persons were also martyred in a suicider Moster…
These Takfeeree Monsters have caused serious injuries to us…
Govt. should reconstruct its security Policy…

  3. Aliarqam

Everyone knows who is behind these attacks….
After 9/11 when Gen. Mehmood, the ISI chief when entered Ramsfield office at US…He was asked
    “Halt! friend or foe?”
The apologists should be asked in the same way
The Deobandi apologists Clerics bodies as Wifaqul Madaris should come with a clear stance….
The role played by this school of thought in the state owned policy of Jihad against deadly enemies has come to an end and it has brought them in focus as state is reviewing its strategy….

  4. Yasir LH , I know your passion for a secular and democratic Pakistan. Please donot think that my question is Anti-Pakistan. It is an academic debate.

Forgive me for sounding passimistic but,Do you think the time has come to re-draw the Pakistani border “East of river Indus”?and the river acting as a natural border against the suicide bombers from North west Pakhtoonistan-Afghania. If Pakhtuns love Islam so much what can we do?

  5. Fahim

My heart is broken on this attack……
Every one knows the sect have plotted this attack
    Government should ban that sect

  6. Ali Ahmad

Ali Arqam, how do you know it was done by Deobandis? why can’t Shias or other sects carry on same task?

  7. M

Ali Ahmad, here is your answer; http://www.bbc.co.uk/urdu/pakistan/2009/06/090612_taliban_responsibility.shtml

Its deobandis have the license to kill everybody these days…

  8. M

bradistan, I have tried to raise this debate, again academically, but get a lot of bashing for that. I suggested joining Sindh & Baluchistan to make up Secular Republic of Pakistan and Punjab & NWFP can become Islamic Republic or Taliban Republic whatever they want. Then join the two in a loose confederation we call Pakistan. This is one way to let the two sides live under the same umbrella…one country two constitutions.

Most Pakistanis oppose such sort of change but then our inability to make changes where and when needed cause events like creation of Bangladesh. Live & let live and make a few amends if need be towards this end.

  9. YLH

    Why Punjab mian?

  10. M

    “Why Punjab mian?”

I knew you wont like it 😛

Its just many Punjabis don’t like to get on the wrong side of Mullah, so let them be. If they want to join Secular Republic later they can. That’s the other side of it; when we have two systems everyone can see how they work and to join one or the other. I am actually more optimistic of NWFP joining the SRP considering their long standing support for ANP.

  11. YLH

    Bradistan…

I find your question strange… don’t take it amiss. On the one hand you claim that Bacha Khan and his progeny stood for non-violence (a claim I have my reservations about) etc … but you want Pakistan to abandon NWFP/Pakhtoonkhwa because they “love” Islam too much.

Pakhtoons are our brothers and Pakistanis. As a citizen of Pakistan, I will never agree to abandoning them. We must however ensure economic growth and progress… a Pakhtoon Middle class will always be Pakistani in its nationalist aspirations. The issue of Pakhtoon Nationalism and Talibanism has to do with the stage of political and social evolution the Pakhtoon people are at this time.

Check this out…this is a fatwa by this Mullah who died today…he called Suicide bombing the highest form of Jihad..

” Interestingly, Mufti Muneeb’s colleague Sarfraz Naeemi also disagreed with his fatwa:
“The edict will benefit unbelief. The entire world knows the motives behind the edict. The greatest benefit will reach to the murderers of the Muslims – India, Israel and the US. At the moment, the Muslims are being massacred all over the world. Instead of issuing the edict of jihad against the butchers of the Muslims, Musharraf has bribed the ulema to get an edict against suicide attacks. The suicide attacks are not haram [forbidden in Islam] but are the supreme form of jihad. There should have been an edict against Bush – that whoever will kill him will go to the heaven.”

  14. yasserlatifhamdani

m mian… I have my doubts about ANP which I have expressed from time to time.

abdul mustafa … dimagh theek hai app ka?

  15. STUKA

Ahmed Mustafa Pai is another example ..declaring 68 other sects as Kafir.

  16. yasserlatifhamdani

    Stuka…

As you are aware… I am the bitterest critic of the houses of orthodoxy and traditionalism (dogma) that are these Naeemia types.

My reason for posting this was to show that we are all in this together… as Pakistanis… Muslims or Non-muslims… liberals or conservatives… Shias or Sunnis… Deobandis or Barelvis.

Apparently this attempt of mine has backfired with fahim and abdul mustafa types.

  17. STUKA

YLH, your personal integrity wrt secularism is never in doubt as far as I am concerned. My point was that a clean break is needed. If Kashmir is a legit issue, keep it in th political realm. If Pak has interests in Afghanistan, keep it in the political realm. It is the usage of religion that is backfiring now. If you look at your own views, you are actually more at odds with the establishment than in synch. The difference is that there are many (Atif from Chowk types) who were very much Jamaati types and supporting the establishment for 50 years and are now turning on a dime.

  18. STUKA

Is Fahim referring to Shias? What sect is he on about?

  19. STUKA

Bradistan Pai, you are being unfair on the Pakhtoons btw. It is Pak Army that encouraged fundamentalism in Pakhtoon areas from Zia onwards. Today you are ready to ditch them? I don’t understand this propensity to divide amogst yourselves?

  20. Neo

Fundo pakistani grave worshipper killed by fundo taliban. Fewer fundos good for us.

  21. The Kshatriya

I ask you pakistani guys to recite this Mantra in times such as these when your nation is being battered daily(although this is a Vedic mantra composed on the banks of Sindhu, you claim an equal right to it ,as your progenitors were largely hindu and many of the pakistanis are still Hindu)…..The Gayatri Mantra:
    ॥ ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहिधियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
oṃ bhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ tat savitur vareṇyaṃ bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayat

    The translation:
O God, Thou art the giver of life, the remover of pain and sorrow, the bestower of happiness; O Creator of the Universe, may we receive Thy supreme sin-destroying light; may Thou guide our intellect in the right direction

My best wishes to your theocratic nation.

  22. @Neo

Your comment is highly insensitive to the tragedy associated with death and loss of human life and is very much comparable to the attitude perpetuated by the ‘fundos’ you seem to hate too much.

Its remarkable how hatred for fundos create fundos of their own accord.

  23. Ali Ahmad

BBC is referred? Oh well. Associating everything with Talibans or Deobandis is not different than associating every thing with Muslims by Americans. It was not an ancient event that how shias killed thousands of kids at Jamia Hafsa in the name of terrorism. So let’s not be ignorant about realities.

  24. Danial Burki

Ali Ahmad: ‘Shias’ killed thousands of kids at Jamia Hafsa?

What have you been smoking? I want some of that special conspiracy blend hashish!

  25. Neo

    EDITED FOR BULLSHIT.

  26. yasserlatifhamdani

The Kshatriya is sending best wishes for our “theocratic” nation.

    The world has gone mad.

  27. yasserlatifhamdani

    Stuka,

Thanks for the compliment. Ofcourse I agree with you … Atif from Chowk types are just dishonest crooks who need to be called out for what they are regardless of what political or religious position one has.

  28. yasserlatifhamdani

    Stuka…

Btw… you are wrong about blaming Pakistan Army for fundamentalism in Pakhtoon areas… Pakistan Army and the US certainly used this fundamentalism and armed it to the teeth against the Soviets…

However… the issue here is to realize that Pakhtoons were puritan long before…. the Taliban – yes under that name- were fighting even Lord Curzon in the late 1890s… under the leadership of Mullah Pawinda.

  29. Neo

    Yasser,

nice, cant take any critism. you call what I say bullshit?

am i wrong about you Pakistanis being hippocrates?

  32. Gorki

    Kshataria, Neo,

Guys, have some class please. Pakistan is our neighbor and real people live in it. They are hurting big time, with inocents dying daily. This is not a cricket match. The least we Indians can do is refrain from using sarcastic wisecracks.
    Regards

  33. Sharmishtha

And besides the sarcastic wisecracks being in really poor taste, these people are also ruining the chance that we Indians have to read Pakistani debates about nationhood, religion and identity on a very interesting webzine. It just ends up derailing the discussion. Given that so many of Pakistan’s problems (like “jihad” and its cynical manipulations) end up becoming India’s problems (like 26/11 and the fidayeen attacks on the Indian Parliament), we Indian readers should try and understand the mature and thoughtful discussions here, even as we keep our powder dry, and never let up vigilance on the borders.

So, please no more Gayatri Mantras (let’s say that ourselves for our neighbors, not ask them to say it) and no more calling for more bloodshed, even of “fundos” (sic). I say this as an Indian who is an interested listener, who is happy that Gandhi, Nehru and Maulana Azad acted the way they did, that India adopted a secular constitution, adopted social and land reforms as a basis for a national community, and as an Indian who has no desire to be “reunited” with the “lost” provinces.

  34. Neo

Wow, great argument…. so I cant spell… Neither could your prophet. May be you should not listen to him either. hmmm.. actually dont think you Pakistanis do listen to him. You still cant decide which Muhammad to listen to Muhammad Ali Jinnah or Muhammad bin Abdullah.

(I can quote Quran and Hadith completely contradicting Pakistanis. In fact Quran has essentially a declaration of War against Pakistan (last part of surah Al Barakah)).

You (Pakistanis in general not you in particular) are not western, you are not muslim. You are hippocratic to all systems of values be them islam or western values.

  35. Archaeo

    @Neo

You certainly may know how to spell. The difficulty is that you do not know much about the big words that you ill-advisedly use.

For your information, since you obviously have not had much success with normal methods of schooling or education, and require mental prosthetics (ask a friend, if you have one, what this means), hippocratic, spelt with a capital, means relating to Hippocrates; generally used for the oath that doctors take before taking up practice. In the context of your incoherent mouthings, it seems, though one cannot guarantee it, that the word that you had been striving for with noticeable lack of success was hypocritical.

If you have nothing to do, and evidently have less to say, could you kindly do it elsewhere?

So far you have shown yourself to be not only boorish and ill-mannered, not to mention foul-minded in mocking the grief of others, you are also an uneducated lout with no redeeming feature. Try some defence sites; they can use your brand of mindless moronic posturing.

And try to understand that the lady’s post was the equivalent of a slipper across your apish countenance.

Its interesting that you are judging my education by my command of the english language.

If you are a brit or an america (ie. a native english speaker), then dont be so arrogant to regard skills in your language to be a criteria for education.

But if you are Pakistani or some other non english native speaker, then you are even more pathetic. You are the desease in your country. Do you worship the brits and the american so much that you regard skills in their language to be the criteria of education? Do You look down upon all those in your country who cant even speak english?

If I had a normal education, woud that mean your logic and reasoning is flawed? If you are wrong about my education, then what other things are you wrong about which are obvious to you?

Anyways, I do have 3 ivy league degrees, to that I swear by the God of Abraham and Moses.
