Should Muslim Children Receive Sex Education?

This news story represents in our view all that is wrong with Muslims in general but Muslim minorities in the west in particular who are hell bent on rejecting western civilization and western values to an extent that they end up becoming infinitely more rigid and maniacal about faith than Muslims from Muslim majority countries.   There is nothing wrong with sex education in schools and in a market place of ideas, Muslim parents ought to try and make their ideas more palatable to their children.   And if western values are so unbearable, move back (and be prepared to find out that people in your motherlands are NOT like you either).   Otherwise embrace your new homes wholeheartedly.  But please stop this drama for god’s sake.-YLH

In an underground hall at the London Central Mosque in Regent Street, a group of parents sitting on plastic chairs is clustered around a power point. A small, neatly dressed man at the front welcomes them, introducing himself as Yusuf Patel. “As Muslims we believe in values,” he says, “We believe in haraam and halal, but sex and relationship education (SRE) teaching in this country does not provide this. It is the responsibility of parents to see their children educated, but not at the expense of these values.”

Pakistan: Intolerance running riot

The nation of 175 million no longer sports a kind, gentle face and is being transformed into a stern, unyielding and humourless entity.

By Pervez Hoodbhoy

MOULDING LIVES: Many village mosques are now giant madrassas that propagate hard-line beliefs through oversized loudspeakers

For 20 years or more, a few of us in Pakistan have been desperately sending out SOS messages, warning of terrible times to come. Nevertheless, none anticipated how quickly and accurately our dire predictions would come true. It is a small matter that the flames of terrorism set Mumbai on fire and, more recently, destroyed Pakistan’s cricketing future. A much more important and brutal fight lies ahead as Pakistan, a nation of 175 million, struggles for its very survival. The implications for the future of South Asia are enormous. Continue reading

“It will cut off Muslims’ heads- Jai Shri Ram”: Nehru’s grandson

By Yasser Latif Hamdani

If Nehru could see this, he would probably not be as blind to the religion and caste-based ugliness of his constituents as he was when he refused to recognize that there was some logic to Muslim grievances.  If the scion of the supposedly secular Nehru-Gandhi family could use such language what should one say of others?

Varun Gandhi reminds one of our own Mr. Aamir Liaqat Hussain.  One suspects that both had sheltered upbringing as is obvious from the copious amounts of baby fat on their faces and one also suspects that there might be greater issues pyschologically, mentally and indeed self image that are at play.

Islam’s Silent Moderates: Subverting the discourse of exclusion 5

by Shaheryar Ali

Of the three great systems of exclusion governing discourse – prohibited words, the division of madness and the will to truth …” Foucault

“If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all.”, Noam Chomsky

The most important system of control of discourse working in the moslem societies is “prohibition”. An imagined ‘Islam’ has emerged as the single most important tool for censorship in Islamic world. When it involves other issues like “blasphemy” one could be certain that no voice will ever emerge in opposition to censorship. This is one of the most suffocating experiences to live in when those who struggled all their lives for change and freedom appear to be on board with the tyrants. It is precisely this “ideological gap” within the progressive and modernist moslem establishment which let people like Ayan Hirsi Ali to emerge!

Heroine of the “new Right”, its fashionable these days to slander and dismiss Ali in almost all progressive circles of Europe. The problem unfortunately will not disappear by this continuous “Tabbara” on her. The lacuna within the progressive left ,which has sealed its lips in name of “anti imperialism” on fundamentalism, freedom of expression, and Islamic roots of violence and subjugation of women, has to be filled. The alliances from Lebanon to Islamabad with Islamic fundamentalism have to be broken and progressive position be taken on feminism and other “transitory demands”.

Keeping the Neo-conservative political agenda aside ,Ali stands out as a bold and eloquent lady who has dared to break the silence on Islamic gendricide. “The caged Virgin” and “The Son Factory” stand out as phenomenal contribution on developing a radical feminist discourse in moslem world. The article I have chosen present the core argument of the progressive moslem left , the argument of “moderate moslem majority” – that “the moderates” are silent .

I recall a line: “Since the holocaust, you know what the Jews fear the most?” ” The Silence!”

Islam’s Silent Moderates

Ayan Hirsi Ali

In the last few weeks, in three widely publicized episodes, we have seen Islamic justice enacted in ways that should make Muslim moderates rise up in horror. Continue reading
