Amaresh Misra, the candidate of Ulema Council from Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency

We are posting an excellent statement released from Lucknow that slams communal forces for attacking the Election
commission on the Varun Gandhi issue. Amesh Mishra the candidate is backed by the Ulema Council.  PTH posted several pieces on Varun Gandhi and many communal visitors sent us email and some also left comments. The purpose of the earlier posts was not to denigrate India or Indians but to condemn what needs to be condemned. As South Asians we immediately get encouraged by such trends. We have to counter intolerance and bigotry of all kinds. Raza Rumi

While speaking at election rallies in the old Lucknow town area on 23-4-2009 and 24-3-2009, Amaresh Misra, the candidate of Ulema Council from Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency, slammed communal forces for attacking the Election commission on the Varun Gandhi issue. Accusing Mr.Varun Gandhi of violating Sections 14, 15 and 16 of the Indian constitution, Mr. Misra said that through Varun Gandhi, the BJP is trying to create another Narendra Modi.
Mr Misra said that the exact statement given by Mr. Varun Gandhi was that `I will break the hand of any `katua’ (a derogatory term for Muslims) which dares to harm Hindus’. Mr. Misra said that the word `katua’ is there in the original CD before the Election Commission. Mr. Misra said that all Sanatani Hindus have been shamed by Varun Gandhi’s statement; these words are used by criminals like Bal Thackarey. Mr. Misra said that the Ulema Council and he will ensure that UP is not turned another Gujarat or Maharashtra.
Mr. Misra stunned the old Lucknow crowd  when he stated that if Varun Gandhi is not given exemplary punishment by the system, the Ulema council will personally punish Varun Gandhi by dragging him to Lucknow and breaking his bones physically. Mr. Misra said that this is the call of aggressive secularism and fight against injustice.
Mr. Misra’s entry into old Lucknow created a virtual storm. Thousands of Muslims, Brahmins and Hindus are thronging his meetings. This follows a week long campaign in Lucknow East and Lucknow North area from 18th March to 22nd March, in which Mr. Misra got the support of several BJP, SP and BSP leaders and sympathizers—hundreds of SP-BSP activists and leaders joined the Ulema Council in Lucknow East and Lucknow North.
In Lucknow North, Mr. Misra campaigned in Khurram Nagar, Madiyaoon Purania, Faizlullahganj, Triveni Nagar, Khadara, Vikasnagar and Janakipuram. Mr. Misra inaugurated the election office of Lucknow North in Puraniya. In Lucknow East Mr. Misra and Ulema Council activists took out a Muslim-Brahmin march—beginning from Ujhriyanv village in Gomtinagar, the two hour long procession covered the Digdiga village, and the huge Vishal Khand area. The procession was colorful as hundreds of Brahmins wearing Ramnami chola marched alongside Muslims raising the central slogan of Ulema Council `Ekta ka raaj chalega, Hindu-Muslim saath chalega’.

What Amaresh Misra has done needs to be applauded. Amaresh Misra needs a standing ovation.

Hindutva terrorists have been running amok for a long time, and it is time that somebody stood up to them and siad that enough is enough.

People like Varun Gandhi are as much a matter of shame for India as are the likes of the nihilists that call themselves Taliban for Pakistan. The respective countries have to battle these terrorists jointly.

A movement is on to book Varun Gandhi for attempt to murderbecause he has attempted to instigate a massacre of Muslims. The genuine Hindus never fall for this game played by fake Hindus aka Hindutvavadis.

“Mr. Misra stunned the old Lucknow crowd when he stated that if Varun Gandhi is not given exemplary punishment by the system, the Ulema council will personally punish Varun Gandhi by dragging him to Lucknow and breaking his bones physically. ”

Who the £$%! is Misra ? Why have i never heard of him, why is he openly threatening public lynchings, and worst of all, why is he being ‘applauded’ in this forum ? Raza, can you please tell me exactly what it is about this trend that encourages you and other south asians?

Misra deserves to be locked up, just like VG (who has earned his place with his hateful comments).

PTH, if you are looking for responsible reactions from Indians who matter, please let me know. I would suggest starting with Nitish Kumar, Chief minister of Bihar and ally of the BJP who has roundly condemned Varun already and called for legal action to be taken against him (without threatening to break his bones or anything else)

Ok, so I decided to research Amaresh Mishra, and the links I found are not particularly encouraging. Unfortunately, I do not think I am allowed to post links here, so I invite you all to do your own research.

However, a few excerpts from an article he wrote on the Mumbai attacks:

“Our worst fears have come true. It is clear that Mossad is involved in the whole affair. An entire city has been attacked by Mossad and probably units of mercenaries. It is not possible for one single organization to plan and execute such a sophisticated operation. It is clear that this operation was backed by communal forces from within the Indian State. The Home Minister Shivraj Patil should resign. The RSS-BJP-VHP-Bajrang Dal should be banned. Advani and others ought to be arrested. Today is a day of shame for all Indians and all Hindus. Muslims and secular Hindus have been proven right. RSS type forces and Israel are all involved in not only destabilizing but finishing India. India should immediately snap all relations with Israel. We owe this much to Karkare and the brave ATS men who had shown the courage to arrest Praggya Singh, Raj Kumar Purohit, the army officer and several others.

A photograph published in Urdu Times, Mumbai, clearly shows that Mossad and ex-Mossad men came to India and met Sadhus and other pro-Hindutva elements recently. A conspiracy was clearly hatched.”

    *******

None of his conspiracy theories are anything new, but they give the reader an excellent insight into his ideological positions. Other popular hits for his name online include a letter from Teesta Setalvad (human rights activist known for her work post Gujarat) to the editor of an Urdu paper which published some of Misra’s venom.

PTH, Raza, MK – i would request you to do a little background research on this man, and tell me whether you still believe he should be applauded, or that the rise of people like him is encouraging.

Thanks, and apologies for the long post.

    SV,

People like Advani, Modi, Vinay Katiyar, Rithambra etc have been saying just WHATEVER they please and walking away free.

For a change, somebody has stood up to noe of them, i.e. Misra has stood up to Varun Gandhi. That is where he has shown courage.

I do not support either his conspiracy theories or his candidature from the Ulema Council. The former makes those who propogate them an article of ridicule, and the latter divides the Muslim vote, giving a free hand to the BJP.

The Muslim community has been continuously working for India, and providing useful value addition. What do they get in return? Getting killed in riots, having their patriotism questioned, and being derogatorily referred to as “katuas”?

Let us have a sense of perspective and balance. Let us be fair.

  5. SV

    Milind…please, let us be fair.

Who questions the Muslim’s patriotism, who refers to them as ‘katuas’? Are you suggesting that is the norm and not the exception? If that is the case, then you are either seriously disconnected from reality in India, or you aren’t really Indian.

Anyway, this is not about you.

I think we have all agreed that Advani, Modi, etc are all filthy human beings who must forever be condemned for their crimes against the country.

However, please do not take half-wits like this Mishra character and take him to be the voice of reason or secularism.. This is exactly the kind of double standards that have led to Advani’s contributions to the English language ‘ psuedo secularism’ , ‘minorityism’ etc. In fact, this is exactly the kind of double standards that strengthen the hand of the Hindu right in India.

You say Mishra has stood up to VG ? What about Nitish Kumar? Or Laloo? Or all of the congress party? Or the election commision? Is Mishra the only person to have questioned VG’s hateful remarks?

Some serious questions need to be asked:

    1. Why is a two bit conspiracy theorist being applauded in this forum?

    2. Why is the Ulema council fielding this person as their candidate? In doing this, they have shown themselves to be a communal, vote-bank driven, conspiracy theory mongering party like the BJP.

“For a change, somebody has stood up to noe of them, i.e. Misra has stood up to Varun Gandhi. That is where he has shown courage.”

So what you’re saying is that people like Zaid Hamid should be applauded for questioning America’s war on terror?

  7. Milind Kher

    SV,

Zaid Hamid is a guy that just provides comic relief. Nobody takes him seriously. So, let’s leave him aside.

I appreciate the fact that you are being unbiased and are condemning Advani and others like him.
That yet does not detract from the need for Varun Gandhi to be condemned, which the Congress and others have rightly done.

I am not commending the excellence of Misra, moral or otherwise, at all. However, he was one person who did what is known in behavioral science what is known as “mirroring”, i.e. adopted a body language/behavior very similar to the protagonist. If Varun reflects, he would realize how barbaric he would seem.

That being said, the wisdom of forming the Ulema Council is highly questionable. The Ummah in India is not united and we do not have good leaders.

The BJP has planted negative thoughts for the Congress in the minds of the Ummah. By dividing the Muslim vote, they hope to breeze through. And they well might.

What is extremely frightening is the thought of these people ruling India.

  8. SV

    Milind,

If you think that Misra is using body language/’mirroring’ to help VG see the error of his ways, then you are quite naive. Hundreds have already condemned what VG has already said, and Misra does not add anything new to this, except more fuel to the fire. Like others, he is jumping onto the VG bandwagon to push his own political agenda. What he is doing is using this opportunity to further polarize an already polarized state – like most of the political class – by calling for ‘mobocracy’. This is not courage, it is cowardice.

Incidentally, I watched Gangaajal last night for the hundredth time. Apart from being a brilliant watch, it is also a very interesting insight into what happens when people like Misra or VG have their way.

    Raza Rumi,

Now you joined the illustrious pantheon of Pakistani secularists along with the lifetime member of that club Mr. Hamdani.

In sotto voce: Dumb guys! The same guy wrote reams about Mossad and RAW being responsible for Mumbai terror attacks.

Ulema likes Amaresh Misra. Zaroor. So are Pakistani “secularists” like Hamdani and Rumi.

Sorry Raza, now you are in the same league as Mr. Hamdani is.

  10. Dr.R.K.D.Goel

I have read several article of Amaresh Mishra. He called himself as a Historian. He is proud to popularise the hindus those followed Sanatan Dharama. He is staunch enemy of Modi and present saffron parivar those don’t Sanatan Dharama. As now so many hindus (Brahmins) leaving the BJP and joining the BSP / SP with muslims. Misra presenting himself a Secularist i.e. why he is picked up by theUlema Council from Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency.
No doubt the BJP Hindutaya policy will not be sucessful any more in the World politics. One will only servive those prove himself as a secular.
Modi also got lot of Muslim votes in Municial elections of Gujarat in 2005. Read a news:-
    Muslims Back BJP in Gujarat
Narendra Modi is dramatically one up on his so-called, secular critics, if the results of the recent Nagarpalika elections in Gujarat are any indication. Incredibly enough, Muslims have played a crucial role in helping the State’s CM and his BJP win 23 of the 28 Municipalities for which elections were held. More significantly, the BJP candidates have made a near-sweep of the Municipalities in Muslim-dominated areas of Niyana in Rajkot district, Sikka in Jamnagar, Pardi in Surendranagar and Arrod in Baharuch. In Niyana, which has 95 per cent Muslim population, the BJP won 18 of the 21 seats, while Sikka with 75 per cent Muslim population voted for the BJP candidates in 19 of 21 seats. In Pardi, which has 50 per cent Muslim population, the BJP won all the 21 seats. Significantly, the Congress was wiped out completely in these elections, as in the earlier polls for Corporations a few weeks ago

But Muslims are lossing faith in Modi’s Secular credentials as Modi has failed to check his young Saffron parivar those are sreading the hate between the Hindus and Muslims of Gujarat.

    @Milind Kher

I must agree with SV on this one. The answer to violence is not violence; it is the rule of law. It was quite appropriate to slap Feroze Varun Gandhi (does his first name scare him at night, I wonder?) with one charge of violation of the law after another. It would be quite inappropriate, in my humble opinion, to slap Feroze Varun Gandhi physically. What’s a constable for?
