We turn to scholars, experts, and pundits to help make sense of the information and phenomenon in the world around us. On September 11, 2001 we faced an event that — as Americans — did not fit into our scheme of understandings (and for this discussion it is besides that point that our nation has a history of imposing worse atrocities on millions of others). Thus, when witnessing 9/11/01, we flocked to “experts” to tell us how to make sense of the event. We were taught that a band of bearded freedom-hating savages in the mountains of Afghanistan organized it.
