In Pakistan, a Sex Industry Has Begun to Boom

SEX IN DEPTH
In Pakistan, a dark trade comes to light
By William Sparrow

BANGKOK – Prostitution in the Islamic nation of Pakistan, once relegated to dark alleys and small red-light districts, is now seeping into many neighborhoods of country’s urban centers. Reports indicate that since the period of civilian rule ended in 1977, times have changed and now the sex industry is bustling.

Early military governments and religious groups sought to reform areas like the famous “Taxali Gate” district of Lahore by displacing prostitutes and their families in an effort to “reinvent” the neighborhood.

While displacing the prostitutes might have temporarily made the once small red-light district a better neighborhood for a time, it did little to stop the now dispersed prostitutes from plying their trade. Reforming a neighborhood, instead of offering education and alternative opportunities, appears to be at the core of early failures to curb the nascent sex industry. This mistake would become a prophetic error as now the tendrils of the sex trade have become omnipresent in cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore, not to mention towns, villages and rural outposts.

An aid worker for an Islamabad-based non-governmental organization (NGO) recently related a story: quickly after his arrival in the capital, he realized the house next to his own was a Chinese brothel. The Chinese ability to “franchise” the commercial sex industry by providing down-trodden Chinese women throughout Asia, North America and Europe would be admirable in a business sense if it were not for the atrocities – human trafficking, sexual slavery and exploitation – which cloud its practice.

Chinese bordellos, often operating as “massage parlors” or beauty salons, are across Pakistan, even spread even to war-torn and restive locations such as the Afghan capital Kabul. Chinese in the sex industry have developed a cunning ability to recognize areas where the demand for sex far outstrips the supply.

The NGO worker said that after months of living adjacent to the brothel things were shaken up – literally. One evening a drunk Pakistani drove his car into the brothel. Later the driver told authorities the ramming was a protest by a devout Muslim against the debauchery of the house and its inhabitants. The NGO worker, however, had seen the same car parked peacefully outside the house the night before.

The local sex industry comprised of Pakistani prostitutes has also grown in recent years. One can easily find videos on YouTube that show unabashed red-light areas of Lahore. The videos display house after house with colorfully lit entranceways always with a mamasan and at least one Pakistani woman in traditional dress. The women are available for in-house services for as little as 400 rupees (US$6) to take-away prices ranging 1,000 to 2,000 rupees. These districts are mostly for locals, but foreigners can indulge at higher prices.

Foreigners in Pakistan have no trouble finding companionship and may receive rates similar to locals in downtrodden districts. More upscale areas like Lahore’s Heera Mundi or “Diamond Market”, cater to well-heeled locals and foreigners. At these places prettier, younger girls push their services for 5,000 to 10,000 rupees for an all-night visit, and the most exceptional can command 20,000 to 40,000 rupees for just short time.

Rumors abound online that female TV stars and actresses can be hired for sex. “You can get film stars for 50,000 to 100,000 rupees but you need good contacts for that,” one blogger wrote after a trip to Lahore.

“The Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi sex scenes are totally changing and it’s easier and easier to get a girl for [sex],” another blogger wrote. “Most of the hotels provide you the girls upon request.” Bloggers also reported that it is easy to find girls prowling the streets after 6 pm, and foreigners can find young women hanging out near Western franchises like McDonald’s and KFC. Such women, the bloggers claim, can lead the customer to a nearby short-time accommodation.

Short-time hotels offering hourly rates can be found all over major cities, underscoring the profits being reaped by the sex industry.

Pakistan can also accommodate the gay community with prostitution. Unfortunately, this has also given rise to child prostitution.

A Pakistani blogger wrote, “We [ethnic] Pathans are very fond of boys. [In Pakistan] the wives are only [had sex with] once or twice a year. There are lot of gay brothels in Peshawar – the famous among them is at Ramdas Bazaar. [One can] go to any Afghan restaurant and find young waiters selling sex.”

As in many societies, access to technology, the Internet and mobile phones has only facilitated the sex trade in Pakistan. “Matchmaking” websites serve the male clientele, while providing marketing for prostitutes.

The root causes of prostitution in Pakistan are poverty and a dearth of opportunities. Widows find themselves on the streets with mouths to feed, and for many prostitution offers a quick fix. A local Pakistani prostitute can earn 2,000 to 3,000 rupees per day compared to the average monthly income of 2,500 rupees.

Forced prostitution is not rare. Women in hard times are often exploited and pushed into prostitution. Sandra (not her real name), said that after the death of her father she was left alone; friends and relatives deserted her after the grieving period. As a middle-class, educated woman she was surprised to find herself forced into prostitution from her office job.

“My boss initially spoiled me at first,” she told Khaleej Times. “[But] now I am in [the sex industry].” Sandra first thought her boss was being gracious, but quickly learned he was grooming her for sex for his own pleasure, and then acting as her pimp.

Many of Pakistan’s contemporary sexual mores may have evolved from traditional practices. For example, the polygamy permitted in Muslim society stemmed from the need for larger family units, the better to support familial ties and tend for widows. Until such ancient customs are updated, women such as Sandra will continue to be bought and sold.

It’s time for Pakistan to admit that prostitution is doing a roaring trade within its borders, and will continue to prosper until it is addressed in a modern manner. Let us hope that the people and government of this proud Muslim country will stop pretending the problem simply isn’t there.

i knew very well that the chinese massage parlors were actually brothels. i often told this fact to people but the young goody good moderate liberal modern elite types always denied and told me that i was a close-minded backward thinking individual who is stereotyping every massage girl as a whore.

now those broad minded liberals can go and $%#$ themselves.

this also proves one thing that most massage girls who cater to male clients will also provide sexual services. but again the goody good moderate liberals will have a problem recognizing this fact.

and im not judgung the massage girls in moral terms. its their own morals.

can anyone tell me why the liberal have a problem recognizing the fact that massage girls are mostly whores???

yup thats true. even some of the well known models and actresses work as high end call girls. to name a few, noor, sana, zara shaikh, sadaf (model) etc. the BLUE PARADISE CALL GIRL AGENCY in lahore can supply you with many female models and actresses.

on tv they appear all clean and nice but from inside…. inside.

  3. Well Mr. Sparrow,
I wonder if you follow the basic ethics of writing, as part of your story are clearly “copy/ pasted” from another blog site that I visited few days back. If I recall correctly, its The Pakistani Spectator. You should at least clearly acknowledge the source.
Besides, how can you say that present prostitution might have stemmed from polygamy in Islam? Why is then prostitution so common in non-Islamic developing world? Why in the West have people multiple sex partners on one side and thriving red districts in every major city on the other? Sorry but this is far too complicated than what your writing suggests.
    Rgds,

    @ SHUMAIL

the liberals are a bunch of HYPOCRITES.

they have all the ‘proper channels’ to do the debauchery themselves. they drink alcohol, do drugs, go to dance parties, clubs and hook up. they flirt and have casual sex and one-night stands

but when the average guy wants to get his sexual frustration out by visiting a hooker they will call it DISGUSTING, IMMORAL and HARAM.

and lets face it what proper sexual outlets does a regular guy has in our country. the goodlooking rich guys can seduce normal women at their workplace and their colleges, neighbourhood etc.
when it comes to casual affairs and casual sex women have very high standards.
an average guy cannot flirt and have casual sex with an average girl because if the average girl wanted sex she will simply go to the giu of higher standards and get what she wants.

women are aware of their advantage.
but when it comes to marriage they will take a f&%$ U-TURN on the looks of men policy.

  5. pringles

Let us look at the humanistic side
I don’t understand all this wailing on the moral aspect of this matter. Where there is a demand there is supply. Lahore is a big and old city and every type of people live here. It has all the problems that all the big cities have in the whole world. I would like all of you to look at the whole matter from the humanistic point of view. As we have tried moral appeals for thousand years and it didn’t help at all. for me prostitution is another form of slavery and it should be seriously considered as a form of humility and disrespect of humans.

  6. ghani

    @ PRINGLES

“for me prostitution is another form of slavery and it should be seriously considered as a form of humility and disrespect of humans.”

and what about the high-end call girls? are they ENSLAVED too. in lahore you can get the local models if you can pay enuff cash. are they being exploited too. are they dumb piece of shit?

in the big cities a lot of girls from good families would do it casually. at some bunglow for a few thousand rupees in order to meet her lavish lifestyle…. is she being degraded too.

the female celebrities who also wrok as whores if your some big shot and can pay a few hundred thousand rupees for a night. if that woman is being EXPLOITED than mind you every teacher, nurse, clerk, docotr is being exploited too and should join this profession.

i agree that MOST prostitutes are the ones who were FORCED by one reason or another.
but a lot of them are in it just for the easy money and bcos of their loose morals. they can easily live decently by wroking at some respectable profession. and they are completely responsible for that and you and me and everyone else HAVE NO REASON TO SHOW ANY SYMPATHY FOR THOSE WHORES.

im sure you are one of those people who say “no woman will ever do it unless she is forced”
and what about female strippers and pornstars… are they being exploited too?

okay then tell me one thing…. what about MALE PROSTITUTES who cater to the needs women clients??
are they being degraded too? are thye being exploited too? are they enslaved too?
BBULLSHIT! they are lucky bastards…they are getting laid and paid….what else would a man want…lol.
let me tell you MR PRINGLES that if only more truck drivers, construction labourers, coal mine workers and sewer workers had the OPPORTUNITY they would leave their jobs and be happily working as prostities for women!! (its just that there is less demand for gigolos and even if there is demand, women want extremely goodlooking male prostitutes to have sex with)

  7. ghani

AND ALL THOSE WHO OPPOSE PROSTITUTION.

why is there a need for prostitution?
    because humans need casual sex.

if humans (men and women both) need casual sex they can do it with each other and there will be no such need for someting like prostitution.
BUT when it comes to casual sex women are much more selective and reluctant than men to have casual sex. this means that NOT all men will be able to fulfill their needs of casual sex and hence the need for PROSTITUTES.
that is why the number of female prostitutes is much more.

so all those who oppose prostitution SHOULD ANSWER me first that how can the ordinary guy who cannot find casual sex with normal women fulfill his needs. bcos women are more selective and can easily choose their casual sex partners (men are always willing)

isnt this unfair that some men can get casual sex because they have a higher social standard and looks. but the others remain deprived?

one may wonder here….why should the average guy remain sexuall frustrated? there are average women out there too. for highly attractive guys there are very beautiful girls, for decent looking guys there are pretty girls, for average guys there are average girls and for ugly guys there are ugly girsl (same goes for social status).

BUT it doesnt happen that way. because if the average girls wanted sex they would just walk upto the goodlooking guy and get what she wants.

so tell me what else can explain the need for prostitution?
and what can explian that majority prositutes are females?

thats the way it is dude. sex happens when a woman wishes. and i agree that the average bloke is sexually frustrated wherever you go in the wrold. maybe more in conservative societies.

and youre right when you say that when a woman wants to have casual sex she will only go to an attractive guy in the short term. the jerks

i guess the other guys are left with no choice but to find sex in long term relationships and use other qualities like personality and stuff to get women. or obviously they can go to prostitutes….nothing wrong with that.

  10. shaheen

We often look at prositutes as whores, but we fail to mention that the “johns” visiting the the brothels also lack moral values.

Many of these men have wifes that are of good character that wake up to find themselves with sexually transmitted diseases because the hubbies were visiting “outlets”. The problem of prostitution is centuries old. One way to curb this is to take pictures of the johns and post them in the newspapers and on the web.

  11. ghani

    @ SHAHEEN

    you are an irrational fool

if a married man is cheating on his wife then its wrong no matter whom he cheats with. and he is answerable to his wife for that.

its the CHEATING part that is wrong NOT ‘visiting the prostitute’.

tell me…would it be any better if he is cheating on his wife with a younger woman who lives in the neighbourhood? rather than a prostitute.

and why take pictures of JOHNS going to prostitutes? why not take pictures of JOHNS cheating with some normal regular girls. why not take pictures of several early 30-somthing aunties living in defence cheating on their husbands with young college going dudes from neighbourhood ?

again this whole misandrist propanganda against the average male who is deprived of casual sex socially and has to visit prostitutes.

  12. what ever happened comment moderation on sites ? Are you planning on running a ‘facility’ for the brothels to run online ? Cant comments be deleted or moderated for once ! NAHH !! too much now is it? we shall let the whore houses run then i guess !!

    Hi Everyone,

Am from India; i read about this blog on a news site.
Only way to stop the current “behind the wall” moral corruption and sexual crimes in South east Asian countries; is to leagalize the sex trade in these countries. It sounds crazy at first go; but think with an open mind now. This way government can have one more revenue stream. tax their earnings, legalize the trade. People will know; be that from any walk of life; where to go for carrying through their sexual needs.
We need to stop looking at sex and as something wrong, a taboo; give sex education to children in schools, let them know whats AIDS and other STDs are. Tell them what is safe sex and what precautions needs to be taken.

    Its just my $ 0.02.

  21. hassa

Has anyone wondered if there is a problem of children being sexually abused, and forced into prostitution, especially street children as there are many on the sleezy side roads in lahore ?

I know there is a lot of corruption and drug abuse in Pakistan, so it would not surprise me if this kind of thing is being brushed under the carpet by the ruling powers and police. I have not seen any evidence of this but it would not surprise me if it was happening.

  22. It is a very depressing article.

  23. Yasir Ghani

Sex Industary was never as open and overwhelming as it is today in Paksitan. I believe the industary has grown to this dangerous level during the previous Musharaf regime. Because Musharaf administration itself supervised the spread of Sex Material like Sex Digest, Vulgur beauty shows, Sex rated CDs and DVDs, Prostitution Dens, Vulgur Parties, Etc, and the list goes on. The Evidence to that is, now you can go to Market Place and can buy Sex rated CDs and DVDs, with out any fear, at as low as 20 and 30 rupees respectively. Same is the case with other material. You can also find youtube Videos of Musharaf and his commerade dancing, drinking and ohter rubish things…In conclusion.no one to blame, but Musharaf’s well orchestrated campaign to spread Sex Industary and immorality in Pakistani society…

    “Average men”:
Aside from Darwinian observations regarding survival of the fittest, maybe those men should understand that by preferring casual sex, with long-term relationships as a disliked second choice, they’re not exactly helping their chances at getting either.

Teen marriage and “arabs are not stupid but they save them from this haram thing .”:
Teens–especially girls–are not fully mature, physically and mentally, to cope with marriage. That is, in fact, the scientifically supported reality.
As for Arabs…I don’t think I need to say anything. Do read “The Dancing Girls of Lahore” (or “Adama”) for more information about your pious Arabs and about prostitution.

    Prostitution:
I agree that not only is there a tendency amongst people to see the issue from only their own (morally outraged) perspective, there is also a tendency to ignore or deny the overall human rights nightmare that is prostitution.
We have to keep in mind that being willing to do something does not quite equal “choosing” to do something.
Ask a prostitute whether she would like to continue being one if guaranteed similar or better pay for some other job, as well as full social integration, and I doubt she would say yes.
Ask, say, a doctor the same thing, and I doubt he/she would say no. (To put the idea “They are prostitutes because they choose to be.” in perspective.)
In a supply and demand relationship, neither and both can be blamed but the sex industry is unique in that the ‘commodity’ it deals in has too many issues attached for it to be seen in completely economic, social, religious, personal, psychological or biological terms. It must be considered in the light of all of these, and its effects judged on the individual as well as collective scale.

At another post, someone suggested a sexual revolution (like that in the West) would cure this problem. Someone here pointed out that prostitution exists even in the West.
I believe a change in attitudes towards sex, giving people greater freedom to express themselves sexually (not necessarily by being promiscuous but by actually declaring themselves and by being accepted as sexual beings) might do more good than a simple ‘liberation’ on its own.

  31. Sac

“Ask a prostitute whether she would like to continue being one if guaranteed similar or better pay for some other job, as well as full social integration, and I doubt she would say yes”

Ask the same to a toilet cleaner and he’ll say the same 🙂 lets ban that too?

remove the taboo and illegality, that causes more suffering because the prostitutes just can not organize / fight for their rights.

  32. sallo

    Hello All,

Thanks for your time for sending in your comments. This article has helped us to discuss about this major issue and share our thoughts.

I wish to express my views about William’s research on gay brothels in Peshawar and wish to point our fellow bloggers to this issue widely seen in North West Pakistan. I personally hold no respect for those homosexual hypocrite people no matter what they talk about their inhuman culture and traditions and blame poverty for all this.

During my travel to various countries in Europe where I came across fellow Pakistanis including people particularly from the north west region of Pakistan I always find them extremely rigid and narrow minded, despite living in Europe for years, when it comes to female education and freedom due to either cultural or religious preseason yet same time their views about homosexuality.

For Muslims according to Islam, homosexuality is as errant, as committing adultery with opposite sex then why they don’t feel fear about their own acts instead keep blaming rest of Pakistan for not establishing true shariah in Pakistan.

I do not question anyone’s feelings and love for Islam or their individual relationship with Allah or how good Muslim he/her is.But I’ve question when they pick up weapons to kill their own countrymen, closing girl’s schools and not give any respect to any female professionals in the name of Islam.

My my what a bunch of hyporcites you all are.!First of all Asif, dear child have you heard of spell-check, your spelling is terrible, did you do your matriculation or did you fail?
Secondly all the dick heads like “shumail
” GHANI” and men who blame women but forget to mention that men or “john’ who are married and frequent customers. While we pretend there is no homsexual activity in Pakistan most men fool around with each other because of the high amount of estrogen that their body emits and there is no outlet so they are arouses with each other? We Muslims are the biggest hyprocrites around in the name of religion we blame the western countires for their culture while we abuse our women and rape and kill them, is there not a high % of child abuse in families? Who the hell are we kidding lets clean our houses before we get on the puplit and scream about others!

  36. Adnan

Working hard to disgrace Pakistan, bast****

go check the stats of rapes done in USA every 2 sec there is a rape done in USA, what about Indian sex markets what about European sex markets where prostitution is legal.

How many girls you tried to help who are doing prostitution for money ?

    Where are the solutions?

  37. Namkeen

Just want to respond to what sallo posted on 25-12-2008. Please find some better way to express your anger against a particular ethnic group.I am sure they were never eager to seek your respect on your visits to Europe and your false ego hurt and you have to blame yourself for that.
I have lived a better part of my life through out Pakistan both in major urban centres and rural areas. My observations are quite contrary to the popular persceptions about homosexuality in the north west.Male sex workers were so much in abundance operating in organising manner in Karachi,Lahore since mid 80’s and they were not from poor families, finding their cliental in clifton,M Ali society and Gulberg and Model town.Hassan square being a hub of that activities. In interior sindh and Punjab it is socially admissible activity, so you never know whats going around and at what scale. The existing misperception about ppl from th north has it’s reasons.Karachi,Lahore and Pindi has about 6 million inhabitants from the north. Most of them from labour class in general and staying away from their homes for a long time spans, indulge in child abuse etc.The temptations are always high because of many reasons, with softer consequences one of them as compared to the north west.
I am in no way justifying that disgusting action but if Mr Sallo was ever a victim of such an abuse, then I advice him counselling by a Phsychologist instead of blaming the whole “group” of people. It’s better to bring to books the police and military officers involved in rape of Saamia Naz and Dr Shazia Khalid.
Regarding women education, one can find rigid views in any part of Pakistan and by the way my mother graduated from Kinniard in early 40’s and I am from the North.
Only Taliban can straighten, your corrupt and hypocrite elite,UP.
Further,Mr Saloo I feel sorry for your loose cultural background.

  38. Atiqa Khani

So brothers and sisters I am confused. Do Muslim men bonk other men ? This is acceptable because we do not allow pre-martial sex? Is this simple groping or do men really do the act. What is the % of men that have had sexual contact with other men 3 out of every 5. I am doing a documentary for CNN and BBC called : Gay partime Muslim men. This documentary was funded by the Gay and
Lesbian, Transgender Muslim Men and Women from North America. This group claims to have a membership of 40,000 world wide and is gaining
wide acceptance for this tolerance. I have shocking
film footage of gay behaviour from the hills of Quetta to Lahore to Karachi. We had hidden camera of religious leaders in the acts of fornicaion
that will ‘blow’ the lid of religious hypocrites which I am sure many of you men can relate.
Thanks for the wonders of technology we can expose these creeps who pretend to be religious leaders then fornicate for their sexual pleaseure.

  39. F.

Someone mentioned something about toilet cleaners:of course. But this job doesn’t reveal too much of society’s hypocrisy.I am not for banning since it would just soothe the ego and guilt of that society.I am for decriminalizing prostitution in every way and working on improving the lives of those involved–they are human beings too,and deserve to be respected like everyone else. And someone else mentioned estrogen:the male sex drive is related to testosterone, not estrogen.

  40. Grimster

Sex is normal, we have made it taboo..

those who understood it and the situation and the demand for release

Made it their business, and fulfilled the Demand.

    simple as that…

The sex trades not just in pakistan but in all cultures rises from a common source…

    Carnal desires…
they are natural and if unfullfilled they increase…

The reason of life is to live and to propagate..

The pleasure involved from the act of sex is no more than an incentive to get the the gene pool propogated and distributed as much as possible before the mechanisms breaks down…

Of all the animals it is only man that has control of his carnal desires… animals &%$* when and where they get the chance…

but even higher brain functions can only hold you off for so long… 🙂

this is where the Business part comes in…
and as long as there is libido and lust
there will be red lights and one nights….
and cash to get them Rx (As Required..)

  41. khan

    Dear Namkeen,

I am appalled with your justification for homosexuality and having very soft corner towards them and your deep understanding about their operations in all over the Pakistan, and same time pro-Taliban views.

My dear brother this issue is not only in Pakistan you’ll find homosexuality in every part of the world including Arab Peninsula. What I tried to mention here was the hypocrite approach of particularly some people from North West, not all. Everyone knows there are large numbers of people in rest of Pakistan who are in this practice as well but they at least don’t kill people in the name of religion or culture as much as they pretend. And list doesn’t end here large number of people been involved in drug trafficking, child smuggling, weapons etc. List goes on… they are even not ready to accept rest of Pakistan as a Muslims State. Despite taking every possible benefit from the State, though at its minimum, they don’t respect it. And please now don’t tell it’s all because they are poor and lack of development and education is the only reason. Everyone knows not the whole community is like that but still there are large numbers of hypocrite people exist there and now taking parts in the movements in the name of religion against Pakistan. Why there is large number of youth as salaried soldier in the Taliban army, same homosexuals in fact for whom I believe you have very soft corner as they are fighting in the name of ISLAM in your books… Please get some help!!! I am not concerned what is happening in the rest of the world but I do care about my own country and its issues, and this is one important issue for our future generations, and yes I don’t need to explain or justify anything to anyone including you.

It’s not your fault if you cannot handle a decent conversation without being personal despite your mother graduated from Kinniard. And by the way you’re carefully chosen name “NAMKEEN” what does it tell about you?

its all happens because, we are not following the islam.I think the Solution of this problem is the marriage of boys and girls in age of 18. and in this connection Govt. and civil society should play role in mobilizing people for Simple marriage. the Prostitution after marriage is bcoz of sexual market , when market is down , they will also leave ……………….

(but one thing is clear that most of the bloger have found this by searching for sex like that in Pakistan)………. why we are doing this ,,,,,,, what is the problem of these bloger…… how they reached to this blog) ……… think:

It seems like William Sparrow is delighted by the fact that sex industry is booming in Pakistan. His article also projects is deep satisfaction that the great efforts of his corrupt forefathers has finally shown results on Pakistan. He deserves a congratulation note on this great success.
People like William oppose a pure and unpolluted respectable lady in scarf, as he wants to see them in a different picture, compared to his own women back home, in a “Please bang my wife” culture.
William and people of his type, unaware of the concept of purity, have more respect for his country women who sleep with dogs, donkeys and are not even ashamed when humiliated in the worse possible manners.
I wish to live the era, when women in the west will know their true values, stop their men from exploiting them and live to the standard of those holy ladies who gave birth to Prophets. My advice to William, try not to inject adultery, infidelity and nudity in nations. Try to propagate purity and heavenly protocols set by your creator.
Don’t feel happy because prostitution is booming in a nation because we are not feeling happy for the prostitution in your country. Respect women, they were not born for prostitution. Prostitution is bad, will always remain bad and we don’t want your and our women to be involved.

  52. sohail

its true that a lot of models and actresses do prostitute in pakistan but the real culprits are the brothel runners/pimps and clients. they should be a few merciless killings of these people and it will reuslt in closure of a lot of brothels if not all.

  53. sohail

women in pakistan are also hypocrites. they oppose polygamy which helps in stemming prostitution. there are a lot of girls who dont get rishtas from bachelors .they can become a second, third or fourth wife but due to family pressure men are afraid to take multiple wives and therefore find it easier to resort to whores. most pakistani wives dont satisfy their husbands sexually as sex is considered dirty by pakistani women and only used as a necessity to get pregnant. girls in pakistan from a young age are told that sex is a filthy act and its a taboo to discuss it. this makes them shy of sex yet on their wedding night they are expected to perform with passion.
parents in pakistan dont even hold hands in front of their children let alone kiss or fondle. this creates an impression among kids especially girls that sexual relations are obscene. girls in pakistan are also prevented from choosing their own husbands and most end up with the choice of their fathers.
there are millions of pakistani females who are widows, divorcees, not very good looking, handicapped or just from poor backgrounds unable to have a dowry. who will wed them? but a first wifes wants to remain the only wife and therefore these women have no real chance of being married.
a huge number of pakistani men of marriageable age have gone abroad permanently and married foreigners.this has made a bachelor a rare commodity in pakistan. polygamy is the only solution. there are many young women willing to wed a older man become a second or third wife but unless society changes men will act like cowards and visit brothels. my grandfather had two wives and it was common in those days to have more than one wife. now if a man takes a second wife his first wife makes a hue and cry and calls him cruel.the truth is pakistani wives prefer that their husbands fuck around rather than stay pious and take a second wife.

I think you must have had a really strange relationship with your mum. And not much luck with your marriage 🙂

  55. bonobashi

    @Chris Hayes

It’s going to take a while to get used to seeing you amble around without your head. Ah, well! Think of the fortune you’ll save in headgear. And shampoos, and hair gel. Not to mention combs and brushes. Heavens, it goes on a bit, now that one gets stuck into it: the price of haircuts, then, quite forgot about that. Scarves. Would you get a sore throat? No nasty colds anyway, so no expenditure on over the counter cold cures which never do anything much anyway. And, oh! I nearly forgot: no kohl either.

    There’s always a bright side.

There are more Pakistani men who marry “foreign girls’ then the other way around. Pakistani men are very selfish, they feel that they rule in the sex/bedroom and the woman is put there for them to get climax and bear children. Pakistani men are not existent when it comes to foreplay, its slam bam- no thanku memsahib!
As a Pakistani young woman I like my men well groomed and take care of their body with exercise and good clothes. I need them to see also my desires. Some moron wrote earlier that the models and actresses were selling their bodies so what you consider the men are doing?
Prostitution is exisitent since decades and man will always desire woman outside his marriage, so it shud be legalised all over the world.
If man wants sex and woman want to give it to him she sud be compensated.

I am a bit appalled at the comment section — how come the PTH allows telephone numbers listed for people trying to frequent potential sex suitors? PTH is a reputable blog, and to see such crude comments is a bit surprising that it got printed in the first place. I am not suggesting censorship, but the standards established by the contents on this site is not parallel to what I am reading in this particular post. People like “Ghani” should be locked in some assylum. And “Asif” who obviously has spelling issues, came to this blog looking for an escort. wow…

Raza, some of these comments where people are freely endorsing their telephone numbers /msn id’s should be not encouraged. Your blog is of dignity and intellectual-friendly debates. Hope you consider my friendly request to moderate the comments.

    regards,
    SSD
p.s hope you are keeping well.

  66. Well, I got into a debate with a colleague once who contended that Islam’s allowing polygamy actually gives women protection and respect unlike the kind of insecurity that has proliferated in Western society for women along with their independence.

Certainly, you cannot blame Islam’s perhaps cover-up sort of rules for the surgence of this market today. It is even perhaps, the growth of an apathetic, modern capitalist society that is ruining the West in this manner as well. Of course, there they are back and forth about legalizing prostitution.

I don’t know what sort of “modern manner” the author is suggesting then. That is a very cryptic conclusion of the article.

  67. A lot of guys argue that it is natural, etc. Well, you should have thought of that when you were building a society and getting bank balances and sports cars while locking women up in houses and hijabs.

Now that we have a society, there is no argument for what is natural and all that bs.

As someone mentioned, it is all Musharaf’s doing. The truth is that average guys are often frustrated BECAUSE they have more freedom to know about sex than girls– not because their libido is higher than girls.

Someone said that guys’ libido is run by testosterone– well, men have both estrogen and testosterone and what the original comment meant was that the estrogen can become dominant at times.

I think Sohail wrote that girls are taught to think of sex as a bad thing– well, what happens when women’s sexual lib happens? Look at the Western society and tell me please. They think that everything goes and actually face peer and societal pressure to see all kinds of sexuality as alright. These days there is a fad for posing as lesbians to attract guys!

I think that Pakistan needs to reverse what Musharaf has done and even whatever else was present from before. I strongly think that sex is an addication and a product of indolence that will grow the more you vent it. Innocence is possible in men and women both as was the case in previous times as people were relatively more innocent even if the whole society was not entirely so. Yes there have been self-indulgent groups in the world ever since who knows and these days it’s the West that we have to blame. But it doesn’t mean that because there have been such groups, that is the only natural thing and that is what we must follow.

People need to vent more energy into work and excercise so that their indolence doesn’t make their minds so effeminate and sexual all the time. This goes for both men and women. It’s a fact that the more you put your mind to work the less you will have idle thoughts. It’s simply how you balance the chemicals of your brain.

And someone is really exaggerating about the scarcity of marriagable guys in Pakistan.

On the other hand, divorce with full support could be made more acceptable and common so that both men and women can remarry as much as they can afford to and like. Marriage has to stay in the first place for keeping financial tracks. This will also not go against religion so much. Generally it should be ok for two people to separate after the child is around 9 let’s say. This way they wouldn’t have to have children with the same partner and people would have less children due to the gap between each child which would really help society.

Even a layman can judge from this lame ending of the article by william sparrow that he is desperate enough for all traces of islam to be removed from our society, to blame it for actually giving rise to prostitution and pimping. The theory about polygamy’s effects is hilarious. Practically, it does the opposite: it would support Sandra rather than push her into evil.

We have our Quran to tell us what’s right so you all can stop with the suggestions. Corrupted governments don’t mean bad or corrupted religion. Of course, one day a non-american govt will be established and we’ll do it our way. Also, remember no one could stop us CUZ WE CREATED THE COUNTRY IN THE NAME OF ISLAM.

I don’t give a darn what he means by ‘modern’ here..Yes, this problem will be solved, but by destroying all such places. Fingers crossed until true leaders come up, and then it will happen..

  70. the chinese are notorious in this.in kabul they opened many brothels disguised as restaurants in 2003-4.

i was a sub contractor of US firm louis burger and i met many LBGI guys like stephen long and so many others in chinese restaurants every evening.

later in 2007 the US forces started a drive against these chinese brothels fearing their intelligence threat.

rates of chinese women went down as 25 USD per trip in 2006.

most were old or in between 30 and 50 imported from backward provinces of china.

my afghan guards routinely visited these brothels and one major i had hired as my security officer often had free trips with force of his uniform and police issued 9 mm pistol.

  71. brothel culture is very old in pakistan, talamba near multan is a historic brothel with a rich history.

lalamusa at one time was a famous brothel.

pindi had serai beli ram which existed when my grand fathers grandfather was a risladar in a cavalry unit in pindi in 1856.

kabul had reka khana for dancers in shahr e kunha.in dr najeebs time prostitution was confined to certain old and known areas.in taliban time it existed although secretly.many talibs married prostitutes when kabul was captured in 1996 because the prostitutes were good in everything starting from lobbying to you name anything.

lahore has had its famous heera mandi

the chinese are a new phenomenon.

everything has existed here its only that the society is based on hypocrisy.

Those women who are criticising men on this blog for talking about sex and prostitution should realise that women groups are themselves also responsible for that. First they got very difficult for any man to marry a second wife – they made it as if it was the worst thing a man could do – and instead they allowed prostitution and call them sex workers but the solution which Islam gave we dont want to accept that – meaning marrying widows or those women who passed their age or could not marry for whatever reason.

Those girls who belong to high society and are studying in colleges like Kinnard and others and are involved in prostitution which many of them are – should be very severely dealt with as its their choice that they have selected this trade. But those poor girls who are forced into prostitution should be retrained into other professions like IT, nursing, teaching, social worker, teaching etc and given an option and opportunity to get out of this trade.

They dont realise that its not only the sex which they are having but their videos and pornos are also being made and put on internet. So if they think no one knows about it they are then sadly mistaken.

In Islam Holy Quran clearly says in Surah Nisa – do not put an allegation on any woman of adultery until there are four witnesses who have actually witnessed the act. But this pornography – made by cell phone and web cams – can easily put a case against them and these women can be prosecuted until Hadd because there is video evidence of what they are doing. If they are not prosecuted in this world then Allah would definitely not let them off in Life Hereafter and they cannot deny what they have done because there is a video evidence and hundreds of people all over the world have witenessed it. I appeal to all those women involved in sex trade to realise how dangerous it is these days because without their knowledge their video could be made and put on the net. Plus they are not only subjected to HIV and AIDs but the bigger curse is Hepatitis C.

Mr. Chussain you write a lot of crap, and you are a male oriented idiot. Blaming women for the ills of the sex industry, I see you do not blame men as according to you and your Sharia laws, women are 2nd class citizens.
A Muslim woman has the same rights as a Muslim man to enjoy the freedom of sex. Sex was given to us for a good reason its men like you that have labelled it “dirty”. When a man enjoys sex but we women are supposed to sit there and let men have their way with us and suffer the pains of labour.
A woman should be free to choose her mate in life, if she want to chose a good looking man with a fine muscular body then so be it.
Please explain why you men have sex with other men before you enter the walls of marriage? Homosexulity is rampant in Pakistan but not talked about. The men in Sind and Punjab and North Western frontier get their jollies from other men and young boys, do you do the same Mr.Chussain

  78. Interesting what about all that talk about pakistan is an islamic state and land of the pure crap ??

  79. Irfan

The reason for thriving sex business in Pakistan is, that, we have gone astray from the teaching of Quran and Sunnah.
There,is a common perception among majority of Muslims in our country that, anyone who just recites KALIMA, will enter the Paradise,so why to struggle/strive hard by following the code of conduct enshrined in Quran and Sunnah. But they do forget that we will be inquired /questioned about our deeds on the Day of Judgment.
Majority of sex workers in Pakistan are not doing his business coz of poverty or illiteracy but for becoming rich and for self pleasure.
In Pakistan, the so called citadel of Islam, hardly you will find practicing Muslims, among the residents of this so called citadel.
Internet and mobile phone technology has got a major role to play in spreading this cancer in our society. In every city you can find internet cafes, with “privacy cabins”,unfortunately, there is no check in this country no one is governing whats happening in those cafes.
The remaining job in being done by majority of the mob phone software down loaders, in the garb of this business, they are also dealing in spreading pornos through mob phones. They are destroying the whole fabric of this society.
Lastly, the worst part is being played by our media,as most of the readers must have seen “phone friendship” ads aired on our media, where a girls invites everyone “main tu kehty hoon sub aa jao line par”.
I feel pity, when i see all this is happening unchecked in Islamic Republic of Pakistan……

Mind-boggling stuff… there has been people with methodical thinking patterns, scientific ones, religious, feminists, and some genuine losers (soliciting free sex, there is no such thing as free – you end up paying one way or another) in this thread.

But this is exactly what Pakistan needs – constructive discussion on any societal issue.

Im not gonna sit on the fence here. I am for family values – no matter what kind of society we transform into – backward, forward, left or right. Our thought process should be directed at how to save family values, respect relationships, freedom of speech yet respect for opposite, education as a right for every one, a pub built in the same street as a mosque (people must be educated about the ills of alcohol, then be left alone to choose). Education of Islam should be compulsory, as is maths, english or other subjects. Open up our society, where anyone can talk about anything, anyone can propose any change and campaign for it. Tolerance is the key here, which incidentally is the product of education.

I live in Australia. I came here when I was 22. There was nothing on my mind but sex and money. I am 35 now and I dare say that I am bent more towards Islam than when I was in Pakistan. I’m sure it is true about a lot of people on this forum. Therefore, give people freedom, give them the right to choose, they will inevitably choose the right path. Its my challenge!

But jannat has a price that for many is too high a price that simply has become unattainable. Now in their belligerent state of mind they lash out at the very heart of that which wants to guide them back to the straight path. We have become Extremist – yes Extremely detached from the straight path, extremely detached from that which defines our very existence, extremely scared of the world and its false gods. “You are with us or against us” still ringing in our ears as we implode in a crescendo of extremism from both sides.

We are brainwashed by the tsunami of media reports that has the straight path referred to as being “Ancient”,” medieval” and at worst blamed for the woes of the world when it is in fact along it you will find the healing medicine that so needed.

When those who are ashamed of there lives and know as Muslims that what they are doing is wrong having been consumed by the false gods they then become Islam’s worst enemies. They are now Munifiqs (Hypocrites) dwellers of the deepest part of Jahanam but I guess it doesn’t matter as they are so far in the woods they really care little if at all.

Oh By the way Ramadan Kareem. As the Frequent flyer program states Extra miles this month on offer – you can get the same offer in this blessed month also – So a visit to the Chicken ranch (you know what that is) will get 10 times Bonus sins…I read somewhere they do good BBQ’s in Jahanam.

  86. I have gone through an article by some William Sparrow dated July 20, 2008. “In Pakistan, a Sex Industry Has Begun to Boom”.
I have been in Pakistan since 1992, and working for social betterment of women, but the picture portrayed by the gentlman is much exaggerated, like the local media in Pakistan.
I do agree that some sex-workers can be seen standing on the roadsides of some posh areas, but they are very few in numbers. If you only visit King Cross tube station and surroundings in London you may find around 300 such workers at a time. If a man stands for 30 minutes there atleast 10 women will approach him by saying “Business-Business” . Whereas in whole Karachi city you cannot get even 100 such women on the roads even on a weekend night. They would never approach you in this manner. There are no legally allowed brothels like in Soho, London. Nor there are any night-clubs, cabrets or stripties in Pakistan. However, there are may be some private clubs. In city of Lahore the Diamond Market is shrunk to one street only, and even there sex business is not legally allowed. The only thing one can do is to enjoy “Mujra” local dance.
The Pakistan Spectator article is almost same which was intended perhaps to curb the menace. There are no brothels for boys or even of girls in Peshawar. Nobody can even think of it….
The Taliban (Afghanis or Pakis) are otherwise very religious people, and such things are strictly prohibited by their religion. How come they allow such a business under their nose, as they do not allow CD shops or even girls’ schools.
Even if we suppose that there is a booming sex industry in Pakistan as reproduced by the gentleman it may be well less than 5% of what we have in Great Britain.
I am surprised that even after the lapse of a year the article is on the top of this website.

hi peoples who are against sex what is your problem i am unable to under stand these peoples who are against sex i think we need to enjoy sex and life sex is great blessing of allah and one more thing this is not neccesry girls want sex for mony they also love to do sex like mens and even if they want for money then also these some backword peoples why are against it we want free pakistan there any one what wan he can do i love pakistan we want librel pakistan more then 75 percent pakistani want librel pakistan

  88. Although the comments section is a bit shocking, I have to say the writer is more or less correct.

We are hypocrites of the highest order when damning women in this trade, but that is the culture of false musalmaniat is it not?

we need prostitutes in out country. it will keep the frustrations of our youths in check, with good medical back up its a blessing for the ppl of pakistan. you may not like what i say but its a fact. our paki men have no clue about how to have sex with women they behave like stupid wild animals.
A prostitute can teach them things their mom and dads did not know. We also need male prostitutes for the women.
    thanks

Demand and supply, when there is a demand, automatically there is a supply, poeple who are labelling massage women as whores, must answer, why you people don’t criticise men who visit red light districts? why you people don’t hate them? Since sex is somehow related to women only, as you people think, it is easy to target women. But things are changing fast, this is modern world, it is not the world, where one man stands up and starts telling fairy tales of him being divine and others believe him instantly. Stop criticising women, Don’t be hypocrites. Or if you hate them so much, you should move to Saudia Arabia for Sin free life.
    regards

  91. raymond

well its good sex is normal and if they are operating let them do it, they are making money guys are getting pleasure, so whats the problem, you guys have problem that the income of those whores should be taxed, ok tax it, well you know let people live and dont even bother whats going on, prostitution is is there since this stupid world was created so let it be there. get over it

  92. Hafiz

    @Rao

It is not a sin free life in Saudi Arabia. I have lived there. We Pakistanis are big providers all kind of “entertainment” for the Arabs. I feel ashamed and disgusted by our lack of self-respect.

As long as you are human sex is natural. People need outlets to vent their frustrations. Simply shutting down brothels, demonizing sex and putting excessive social restraints will breed homosexuality. Case in point – Saudia Arabia. From the experience of friends who have returned from there I can say that there are too many frustrated people turning gay due because they simply don’t have possibility to meet the other sex.

My chacha is such a hypocrite he such a devout and strict muslim but i know he visits prositiutes. Life for his family is hell. But my father is the opposite yet he treats us well and he is not oppressive to us. Another thing my uncle i think goes not really understand his contradictoy beaviour. Bottom line …. i find the strict muslims are oppreive and hypoxrites and i don;r want to marry such men.

prostituion should be legal in Pakistan. If you are going to tell me its not allowed due to religious reason i will tell to FO.
We need legal brothels supervised by the state and medical ppl.

  99. farhan

well well what good are we serving here through this discussion, though more of giving a hype to some thing which is by no means an issue at this stage. infact this discussion is serving more like classifieds for relation seekers as i myself got some contacts while going through 😉 thanks anyway . as far according to my information these activities are happeing all over the world and in comparison they r still much in check in this part of the world . unless u guys keep on going through ur biopsy and end up doing nothing rather spread the cancer

  100. hashashin

The whole idea of prostitution is awful on many diff levels , but the only way to end prostituion is by chemically castrating all men

We desperately need to think of regulating prostitution for std prevention.

Even religious evangelicals fall sick and need blood from time to time. Unless you want to take your chances on window period hiv positive blood its directly in your interest to regulate brothels.

  101. Amna

    @ Susan Lambert

Pakistan is not England but supposedly a conservative Islamic country. The difference of 300 to whatever number of prostitues is irrelevant. What the author points out is Musharraf’s allowing this industry to spread to respectable neighbourhoods, etc. As we all unite to hate an existing dictator we have to keep in mind a terrible curse he has left Pakistan in. Not to mention, there are videos on youtube of women on tv pointing towards their unmentionables because they have blindly started wearing such tight clothes and now I now hear aging women on Pakistani tv talking about their receding looks. I have also heard from word of mouth that Musharraf jokingly claims to have slept with all women (of Pakistan). This is a highly shamefully thing for a country in which people are either apathetic or gutless.

    Dear ALL
i believe the Society in which we are living is continously under Physiological problems such as high inflation , family problems political unrest and Terrorist attacks are so common in Pakistan my country i truly love the most that it has created a wave of unending aniexty in the life of the our people. And many other issues that we know of in this stressfull era has ENFORCED man or a woman to look for a way of retreat or an escape route that can give them a sense of relief to their endless efforts to get rid of their problems i am not saying that SEX should be legalized but this is considered between many others unhealthy coupings for release of TENSION that resides with in us and i also believe it is very difficult for an ordinary person to controll his urge for satisfaction and he will find a way to calm himself no matter how he does it , with in same sex or he/she gets involve with another genre. It is not about ISLAM or of ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN i think and may be i am wrong it is about human NATURE and it’s demand and how you fullfill that demand either HOOK or by CROOK. with your better half or with another person.

What an enlightenment? My English mars me from more eloquent expressions? I grew up in quite a conservative atmosphere, I thought about woman in terms of chastity. I remember my shock when being in first year of inter i learned that women do intercourses and it was shock to me. It was like an idol breaking, subsequently in my graduation i visited a pros in Lahore with the help of one of my friend but it was not a good experience i remember the words of pros when she threatened “juldi karo nahin to tumhari gaand merwa doongi”.

Image of woman was tarnished in my vision, but it would be worth mentioned that I was a sensitive child who was severely beaten by my mother in my childhood so the sense of sanctity and chastity of woman actually included a sense of fear of woman. I than massively visited pornos but it didn’t give me normalcy. I wanted a “devi” perfect eastern type
woman my wife but actually there was none like that. I thought talking nasty things with woman may give me some sort of normal attitude so i talked on mobile phone with women and talked nasty “Gandi” things. Even this did not repaired the damage in my psyche. I married now i have a baby boy I enjoyed having sex. but still there is something lacking. I can’t talk her barely or dare. I fantasize a woman friend whom i talk everything every nasty thing in person it doesn’t necessarily mean that we should have s.. but we should talk everything about it. Though in preceding years i had homo type relationship but it was never over powering nor it was well come, I think woman would never know it, again to my shock they knew about it and very deep knowledge of it. I don’t know how i should come up with this problem hopefully any one amongst you may help me in this regard and give me some suggestions.

    Dear Sohail sahib,
Your physical sex life is complicated with your weight on sexual mores and religious beliefs.
You are torn between the physical desires of the body and have use artificial experience to fill this void. Sex is a physical activity, and having a wife is different. You seemed to have experimented with various sex tools to satisfy your earthly desires.
You first have to love yourself, take care of your body to be desirable. So others can be turned on by you and desire your body for their pleasure.
Looks like you have not achieved this so you you are a lost soul. See a sex therapist to help you sort out the deficiency in your life. Once that is repaired then the rest will fall into place.

  112. Shahzad

    Sohail,

Boys with overpowering mothers are often confused on how to become men when adulthood comes around. But at this stage in life you have no choice but to be a real man so that you can teach your little boy how to be a man, and not be confused like you. My prescription for you, though I’m not qualified in any degree, is for you to start focus yourself. First focus on yourself. Put aside the emotional drama and see where you could be better. Then make goals to improve yourself, and just do it!

At the same time, you need to cleanse yourself mentally and physically. Do some research, work with your physician, and start cleansing your internals. Start exercising if you don’t already. Work out 5 times a week at least. Do a mix of cardio and weights. Don’t skimp on the weightlifting. Find a routine on the internet. Weightlifting will help you become disciplined and bring some ‘mojo’ into your system.

Lastly, start praying 5 times a day. You need to show your boy that the way of the Muslims is to pray. Remember, whatever you lecture him, he isn’t listening. Instead, he will be imitating whatever you do. So I hope you understand you have to focus on yourself to train him. Good luck. Try this for at least 6 months and you’ll see results.

  115. Pashtun

I vehemently resent your stereotyping comment about “Pathans”.
First we are not “Pathans” we are Pashtuns/Pakhtuns; and secondly the incidence of bi-sexuality is statistically the same in all population samples of equivalent size.
    The rest is myth.
Anal sex goes through cycles of popularity, even with men/women, judging from stories in the yellow press.
Please refrain from demonizing 6o Million people as if they were one person.
The Kama Sutra is full of examples of sexual positions that have homosexual overtones, however many would consider sexual position variety healthy for a good marriage. The old adage is: men want a lady in the house and a whore in bed. Your story may be proving this to be true. A ‘good’ wife ought to take this into account and ‘save’ her marriage.

  116. Hassan Bajwa

I really don’t get how some people can go ahead and lay the blame for the rise in the prostitution on WOMEN!?!?

The sex industry relies on a very simple model of supply and demand. People want to have sex and the restrictive and ostensibly “pious” society of pakistan denies them the possibility of doing so without involving the sex-industry.

The “cure” for rampant prostitution is not increasinly draconian legislation, clamp-downs or vigilante action against prostitutes… the cure is openness

If children are told about sex in school, if parents speak to children about the intensity of sexual intimacy, if young people are taught not to divide all women into either hookers or angels, if adolescent boys and girls are given the tools with which to control their own sexuality and if our legislation is amended to reflect the reality of human sexuality… only then can the scourge of human trafficking, exploitation and sexual violence be controlled.

To attack brothels for existing achieves absolutely nothing. The existence of brothels and the fact that they thrive even in a restrictive society such as pakistan is a clear indication that something is very wrong in our society’s perception of sexuality.

  117. Abu Bakr Hussain Jaffri

    @ Hasan Bajwa

there is defnitely a factor of our hypocritical society that leads to sexual frustration among men consequently explaining demand for prostitution.

but there is another element to it. why does the demand for female prostitutes still exist in sexually liberated societies? the reason is that there is an inherent difference between sexualities of men and women that means men have a stronger desire for CASUAL SEX ie sex without strings attached. young men who are single dont want to get married every time they want sex and its reletively much difficult for men to find a willing sex partner.

women, in any society, are 10 times more selective about a casual sex partner (in any society) and so when a man wants JUST SEX, chances are that he might have to pay for it.

  118. shiv

In his seminal work entitled “The Arab Mind” – Raphael Patai wrote, on the issue of sex:

The issue of sex in the Arab world reminds me of the old story about the Sorcerer’s apprentice and the pink elephant. The master of Alchemy, after explaining to his apprentice the complex steps to be followed in making gold, added: “And most importantly, throughout the entire process you must not think of the pink elephant”. Having been duly impressed by this warning, the apprentice tried desperately to heed it, but, of course was unable to keep the forbidden subject out of his thoughts. At last he had to give up his attempts at making gold and sadly reproached his master: “Why, O my master, why did you have to tell me not to think of the pink elephant? If you had not, I would never have thought of it”

Sex is part of life and my little reading tells me that sex is dealt with in a refreshingly pragmatic and matter of fact manner in Islamic literature including, if I am not mistaken, in some Hadiths.

But Islam too has been overtaken by people whose beards grow into their brains, with Pakistan becoming the unofficial leader. The suppression of sex by ignorants is so extreme that, like the pink elephant, it obsesses and consumes people who are forbidden any access to allow a perfectly natural phenomenon to manifest.

Of course Arabs are the usual culprits who are blamed, but Pakistan is not far behind in its mindless suppression of sex. Muslim women have been portrayed as so “unreachable” that conquest of the kafir woman abroad becomes essential for a lot of Pakistanis. This is sad for Pakistanis. From a kafir viewpoint – Muslim women are no less sensual than anyone else, but they can only express that in secret with kafir men or they are toast. There is no need for all this.

i got nothing against the sex industry if regulated by the medical industry. both men and women of pakistan need sexual experience. i would never marry a virgin girl of pakistani or any other origin. they are so lousy in bed that the man automatically goes to visit a prostitute because she is more fun than the wife. the same goes ofr the women. i mean who wants to sleep with an inexperienced cow?

DO NOT USE “AGE” as an excuse for speaking a language badly. go back to school & IMPROVE you skills to speak good ENGLISH.
“17 years old’s” like you are a SORRY DISGRACE because you reflect a generation of youth in Pakistan as to why Pakistan is failing.
I know many “17 years old” Pakistani youth that speak good English and are a good representation of Pakistan!
But you FORDY SHAH is a great example of a failing cowards that are making Pakistan fail as a nation.

One of the reason for this increasing sex industry is the poverty which has increased by leaps and bounds in Musharraf Era. Moreover, the Indian Channels have also contributed to this factor by telling the young tv whatchers that free sex is not as bad as it is told.

I know and have heard the stories about many people in Lahore who are poor they bring customers to their houses and offer their wives. They have found it an easy way to make both ends meet and taste some modern eminities.

The character of the religious leaders is also accountable. They are greedy, sefish and have no thinking and plan of fighting this evil. They just mind their own business.

  131. Khadija Noor

“Moreover, the Indian Channels have also contributed to this factor by telling the young tv watchers that free sex is not as bad as it is told. “- By NASEER QURESHI
What a bunch of CRAP! NASEER QURESHI Sexual desire in men & women is in every human. It is ones choice to manage or act on it. Sexual urges are uncontrollable so external factors just visually simulate the senses- so in future instead of making broad statements do some research on HUMAN SEXUALITY<

  132. Razaq Chaudry

I think Pakistan is a banana republic(although Gen Musharraf denied it wheminently). Any industry thrive on principle of demand and supply. There is lot of demand due to black money and there is lot of supply due to poverty and injustices in society. Family strucrtures have weakned, explosion of internet and cheap text rates have given independence and secrcy to young girls from lower middle class families. The girls are sitting in-between their father and brothers and texting their friends with immunity. For any frustated person, a reason is required to trip and the unjustices in our society provide planty of reasons.I am not much concerned about prostition, which is the oldest profession anyway, but my main concern is those young girls from respectable families who go back to their dinning table after making 1000 rupees.

  133. This Hon. Dr William Sparrow, a born art critic, dis-scribes very attractively, I humbly invite him to write on the Company Art in Pakistan and About the misogynied Salmalocci Miniature-Memsaabs of Pakistan we inherited from The Raj..

Oh! boy the inflation in Pakistan takes the pastry. In prices our Red light girls (and gigolo-boys) – – pricy fruit of the forbidden noveau-riche trees, and self-perceived ‘art’ by and car-o-bar=ed by our memsaabs lead the rite-way. What would not sell in the open market for Pound One can fetch sum 400 pounds in Law Whore ( at least one Laidy jets to India and fetches Rs three Indian Million in Forex in a few days! she is worth it!!). Amazing.

In Pakistan, I recall in 1957 from the Law College nearby, a social visit to the prettiest courtesan costed Rs 101 for the needful for as long as you could stand (oopps!) the stentch of the callgirl-ville. Mujra+ Annonymous.

I re-call with nostalgia that I bought the best painting, a framed Land Escape, in University of Punjab Fine Arts Annual Show for Rs. 100/-.

I shrudder to think of the pre-VAILING prices today. It is beyond my outreach/wherewithal/bailiwicked. Believe-it-or-Not, I cannot appease “in” this System!

    THEREFORE,
I give away my paint(h)ings for nothing to the Needful aesthetes for soliciting.

  134. Death before surrender

1)shame on those secular sex maniacs (male or female) hwo are supporting casual sex and prostitution in pakistan.
2)i think these dirty people have done this in there lives that is why they are supporting it.
3)so listen to me u fools.
4)prostitution and casual sex are prohibited in islam.
5)why? because it destroys the society.
6)how?aids,hiv,hepatitis c etc etc etc will destroy the society.no u use condoms?
7)than the second thing is its un natural a father and mother not allow his son or daughter to have such thing so as a husband and wife so as brothers and sisters dont want such dirty thing for each other and they will not allow it.so why still parents or brothers or girls them selves put them in prostitution?
8)because they cant control there nafs(inner self) who continuously ask for comforts and wordly things so to ful fill them people gets money even they have to go in to prostitution.
9)so control ur nafs(inner self) it only gives u wrong directions and with the mercy of Allah who put soul in us which gives right directions.
10)so stop following ur nafs(inner self) and stop following devils satans direction and follow the sunnah(life of beloved prophet)
11)our beloved prophet said(who ever do nikkah (marriage) fortyfied himself from satan)means the satan will no longer or with the same pressure try to put a human to do sex through wrong means.
12)so marry if there is so much fire in u.stupied people.

  135. Death before surrender

    13) marriage is the right path which gives a man respectful positions like a husband a father a son in law and to a women a mother a wife a duaghter in law.
14)what prostitition gives?shame, disgrace makes a women a whore which what ever u gave protection in law still remains a sluta whore to society.and male who does this also dont get any reputation in society.and loose money time respect and most importantly makes angry his creator Allah almighty.
15)marriage is natural and casual sex and prostitution are un natural against religion against moral values.
16)and if people say ohhhhhhhh noooo women and men are poor thats why they indulge in casual sex n prostituion.so listen to me in our day to day lives we observe there are many people who marry and have only one legal sex partner means wife or husband and they may be poor middle or richer they live a respectful life which puts good effects on there childerns.
17)and if people say ohhhhhhhhhhhhh noooooo poor people also do it because they dont have money.so listen to me there are many poor people who ate grass rather than selling there respects.
18)so marry it is right, islamic, religious and natural way.sont indulged in prostitution as it is a devils way.

  136. Death before surrender

19)one more curse of casual sex and prostitution is bastards childern who have no future.they cant marry in rescpectable families and ultimately ends up in the world of prostituion.
20)such childern are also an easy prey for human trafficars and pedophiles or even if they grow up they have a tag on there fore head that they are bastrads such childern only ends up to be prostitutes or pimps.
21)so plz dont support prostitution try to finish such thing frm society its not a solution but a problem giving rise to more problems.

  137. Death before surrender

22)one final and last thing i have to say to u supporters(males n females) of prostitution and casual sex
will u allow ur duaghters, wife, husbands and sons to have such thing?
i know the answer is know as u would all like ur childern to have a good and bright future.so shame on u supporting such things for others.

  138. Death before surrender

    correction:
i used wrong word “know” instead of using right word “no” in my point number 22.

  139. sabazwari

sex is essential for every man and woman as like water drinking and food eating or sleeping this is the responsibility of govt that provide opportunity to all above age of 18 year as a fundamental right of the citizen and make simplest marriage system in pakistan to full filling of the existing requirement of citizens. For temprary sexual relationship Muta should allowed because it is the need of today and minimize un natural sexual satisfaction methods i.e. animal sex. sex toys, homosexuality, mastarbation etc. and only man and woman should allowed for sexual intercourse of both type permanent sexual relationship with permanent marriage couples and Muta for casual sex relationship it will be much more better than existing condition. 2nd, 3rd and 4th marriage should allowed to those man who can justified with their wives. Married women they are not satisfied with their husband should seprate immidiately and no women should allowed to be born baby of other than their husbands.

Who gives @sabazwari the right to dictate sexual mores for society. Is it because the likes of @sabazwari live in a country that has been ruled by the dhanda and dictators?
All you holier than thou, stop trying to shove your ancient sexual values down our throats, we just refuse to have it.

What is Muta? Sounds like fun.

  142. @Shiv

    Temporary marriage.

Think Mughlai chinna veedu (excuse my non-T accent). People always find a way to have fun.

    Shiv,
It’s more of a Shia thing, at least that’s what my Sunni friends tell me..

I agree with your suggestion that the government should also cater to the sex needs of the people. The Peoples Partiy’s slogan ‘Roti, Kaprha aur Makan” should also include a promise for provision of sex as roti, kaprha aur makan to jail mein bhi milta he. Yih sab kuchh to janat mein bhi milta tha Adam ko magar woh bhi chila utha tha kisi kammi ki khaatir. Woh kia thi siwaaey sex companion ke.

Islam ne to barhi liberal policy apnaai thi sex ke baare mein. Islam mein to beewiyoon ke sath loudion ki bhi ijaazat he aur Mutah, yehni waqti shadi ki bhi, magar bura ho in be-deen mullaaon ka jis ne yih sab sahoolatein haram kar dein aur khud ‘londe-baazi’ mein lag geya. Aajkal jo dehshat gardi ki waba pheli hui he us ki wajah bhi, mere khayaal mein ghaaliban yahi sex-starvation hi he, is pakiland mein.

  145. PEER SCHAMWHOREISCH RIDZVAUN AL-MURTAZA NAQVI-ALBUKHARI

I came across this Blog by chance. I note that some socalled “Syed” of Kharian is itching (Kharishing) for a tall beautiful girl from UK, USA who can support/obtain a freebie Visa for him.

This, tits-for-that constitutes Advanced Sex Trade, I am afraid. Also, it amounts to Prostitution of the worst unkindness.

I doubt that any female worth the name in UK/USA is pinning for a gigolo from Kharian.

It is noteworthy that only two occupations are prospering in Pakistan. The Oldest Profession; and the Almost-Oldest “profession” – – lawyering (with few exceptions). Both professions are “coming” in our society in an unbecoming manner.

Thank you, Harris Steal Mills and its ilk as well as its ever-ready Hertz advocates!

  146. No topic has attracted so much of a commenter than this, lol. Usually, I don’t join a forum where I know I would be taken less seriously, but any way, here is my 2 cent.

This oldest profession is the golbal disease, if it was a disease. Nature has put sex in animal kingdom (including homo sapiens) for production of descendents to keep alive the kingdom. Dolphins and humans are only two species that have sex for pleasure, for other species reproduction is the main criterion. Therefore, sex among man and woman (both) is integral part of life. Since society prohibits sexual relations other than marriage contracts, the sex urge remains within control in most of men and women as they have to remain unblemished in the eyes of society, and restrict themselves with bed time fantasies and masturbations. But, five fingers are not the same. Some men (women as well) have thrill in no nos. The prositution started from there on demand and supply axis.

Whoever is the author of this article has some biased perception among muslim countries. While this oldest profession is worldwide and more blossoming in Western world, he chose to pen down about Pakistan. The author has blown out of proportion on this subject. Prostituion is many fold more in West than in Pakistan, though there is no below poverty problem there. My brotherly advice to him is to take up the issue from there where it is maddening spread. Thanks to internet, prostitution in West has taken a progressive turn. There are thousands (if not million) Escort sites on internet. Prosititutes are no more required to stand in their revealing tank tops and stockings on the footpaths for customers, no apprehention of cops, all deals settled through emails or private telephone links.

For us, the point to ponder is Misyar marriage or vacational marriage being practiced in Arab world. I think it is a form of legalized prositution. I will pen down on this issue some other time. I had said I would submit 2 cent, looks like it is 5 cent now.

  147. Let’s follow the Arabs, being the misanthropes of marathon mediocrity.

When was the sex industry in Pakistan in any kind of recession, so to say???
