Agree with most of what is written here (it is regurgitation of his book "clash of fundamentalisms") but neither Gandhi nor Nehru were giants ... they were pygmies built up by their British masters.

Having read this five or six times before as well, I have found the character of Mr. Nizamdin quite ironic and even idiotic...

as far as Dr Collins is concerned , its matter of his personal conviction, he never was an Atheist. He wrote he was "sort of an atheist" in high school, but he was a practicing evangelical Christian almost all his adult life.[a very very rare thing for a scientist and esp a biologist of his stature] Human Genome Project proved the basic premise of evolution that all life form has same life structure and a common origin. Even as a Christian Dr Collins has the academic honesty of telling the truth , for example that "evolution is a law of science" and his rejection of creationism and intellegent design [which are yet another of religious medias lies imposed on scientific community]
He remains a committed evolutionist as almost all leading scientists and biologists are [apart for lies spread by media]

Einstein never believed in God, his correspondence with the Jewish Rabi is on record. It is a lie that was spread in his life time as well and the great man wrote :

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal god and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."

The confusion existed because of this style to talk about un known which he called a "religious attitude" and himself a deeply religious man. This is not the "organized religion" and he never believed in a Personal god and certainly never believed in Judo-Christian-Islamic god . Newton believed in a God but that god too is not same of judo-christian tradion. he rejected holy trinity and was considered a heretic all his life, Most of these scientistic if they believed in god believed in a deistic entity which Carl Sagan clarified "It doesnt make much sense to pray to law of gravity". Moreover Einstein was a socialist.

This is again a great lie that scientists believe in God, over whelming majority of the Modern scientists have never believed in God. following is the study that was done in 1998

The results were as follows (figures in %):

     BELIEF IN PERSONAL GOD 1914 1933 1998

     Personal belief 27.7 15 7.0
     Personal disbelief 52.7 68 72.2
     Doubt or agnosticism 20.9 17 20.8

     BELIEF IN IMMORTALITY 1914 1933 1998

     Personal belief 35.2 18 7.9
     Personal disbelief 25.4 53 76.7
     Doubt or agnosticism 43.7 29 23.3

"Summary of a paper that appeared in the 23 July 1998 issue of Nature by Edward J. Larson and Larry Witham: "Leading Scientists Still Reject God." Nature, 1998; 394, 313"

The latest work which has been conducted by Professor Dawkins suggest a even worse ratio of believers amongst the top most scientists of world today for example in Royal Society and American national science associations. His statistics to date have not been challenged by the bodies who they talk of .

The most comprehensive meta analysis study done of the question of intellect and a belief in God conclusively shows that high IQ is inversely proportional to a belief in god

i have nothing against believers, its a personal right but please dont change the facts.

Tariq Ali is nothing infront of those high profile scientists who believed in god. Newton, Einstein and the contemporaray scientist like Francis Collins (who led the team of scientists to crack the human genome) can't be branded as backward and ignorant just because they accepted the concept of God.

After cracking the code Fransic declared (Francis was an atheist until the age of 27) "I have found God"

General Sir John Glubb's book "A Short history of the arab people" is a far better account of all the things Tariq talks about and in far greater detail and analysis. I'd highly highly recommend it

These are the first SIX chapters of his book Clash of Fundamentalisms. Why the 7th chapter wasn't included to complete Part 1 of the book, I will never know. Maybe because it talks about Islam and polyandry....?

At any rate, somenoe should have divided this "article" into chapters or something so to spare us the confusion. Also I'm not sure why some paragraphs are missing and the sequence distorted. We would all benefit a lot more from reading the book which is brilliant.

Tariq Ali is one of those confused individuals with a gift of gab who doesn't have much substance to his writings. All his writings can be summed up as follows: Blah Blah Blah & more Blah!

Tariq Ali is showing his complete ignorance in the first few paras of this article. His assertion that to be modern and progressive means to be an atheist is contradicted by the rest of the article. There are a few historical inaccuracies in the acount too.

Although its a good sum up of Islamic history, but I am unable to comprehend the reason for the pretext provided by the learned author. Neither does the title relate to the actual content, rather to the pretext. This could well have been separated into two articles, one pertaining to author's childhood commentary on Islam, and the other for Islamic history.
